Dembele feels hurt that he was forced to leave by the Blaugrana after being impressed by the delay in signing a new contract.
Ousmane Dembele has been asked to leave Barcelona as soon as possible after being dropped from the squad for the Copa del Rey clash with Athletic Bilbao, and the player has now responded.
The France international was told by Xavi on Wednesday (19/1) that he must leave Camp Nou unless he is willing to sign a new contract.
The winger is reluctant to sign a new contract, with Barca director of football Mateu Alemany claiming on Thursday (20/1), having given the player the green light to leave.
Alemany told a press conference ahead of the clash with Bilbao: “With Ousmane and his agent, we started a conversation around July.”
“All this time, almost seven months, we have been talking, Barca have made different offers, we have tried to find a way for the player to continue with us and the offers have been rejected by his agent.”
“It seems clear to us that the player does not want to continue at Barcelona and is not committed to Barca’s future project.”
“We informed him and his agent that he must leave the club immediately because we want players who are committed to the club project.”
“We expect the transfer to happen before January 31. The sporting consequence is that we don’t want to have players who don’t want to be at Barca.”
“The fact that he was not on today’s list is a consequence of this whole process. The coach has our full support, it is a consistent attitude.”
Barca’s squad list for the meeting with their La Liga rivals, before losing 3-2 to Bilbao in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey, Friday (21/1) early morning WIB, did not include Dembele’s name.
In a statement posted in French and Spanish on his social media, Dembele argued that his future was in his agent’s hands and he just wanted to play, insinuating his relationship with Barca was like blackmail.
“I forbid anyone to speak in my place, in place of my agent, whom I have complete trust in,” Dembele wrote on Instagram. “I am still under contract. I am completely in the hands of the club and my coach.”
“I’m not a player who cheats let alone a player who has a habit of succumbing to blackmail. Indeed, love is a kind of blackmail. There are negotiations. I let my agent handle it, that’s his territory.
“My area is a football pitch, just playing football, sharing moments of joy with my team-mates, our supporters. Let’s focus on the important things – winning.”
Dembele has spent the last four and a half seasons at Camp Nou, having originally joined the club from Borussia Dortmund for €145 million, but now has just six months remaining on his contract.
A number of English Premier League clubs are interested in signing him, as well as German giants Bayern Munich and top Italian team Juventus.
