Embark on a unique journey to Machu Picchu, the archaeological heart of Peru. Discovering Machu Picchu means immersing yourself in the rich history of an ancient culture. With its enigmatic and breathtaking architecture, offering stunning views, planning your trip to this grand site becomes essential. From selecting the ideal season to preparing the details of your backpack and choosing the right tour, each aspect contributes to a memorable experience.
Join us in this detailed guide by Machu Picchu Peru Tours, as we reveal the secrets to making your trip to Machu Picchu unforgettable, filled with discoveries and adventures. Choosing the right time to visit Machu Picchu is crucial to ensuring an unforgettable experience. We recommend planning your trip between April and October when the Cusco region enjoys drier weather and sunny days.
During these months, daytime temperatures hover around 20°C and drop to about 10°C at night, offering ideal conditions to explore the sanctuary without the disruptions of sudden rain or erratic weather changes. This season also provides more spectacular views, allowing you to fully appreciate the majesty of the surrounding valleys. Avoiding the rainy season ensures that your visit to Machu Picchu is both awe-inspiring and enjoyable.
There are several transportation options to reach the iconic Machu Picchu, catering to each traveler’s adventure preferences. The fastest and most comfortable way is by train, with daily departures from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, the nearest town to the Machu Picchu citadel. This three-hour journey offers various services and amenities, allowing you to enjoy the scenic landscapes as you approach the site. For those who wish to acclimatize before their visit, Aguas Calientes offers accommodations and a craft market for relaxation before continuing to Machu Picchu.
For adventure enthusiasts, trekking the Inca Trail is an unmatched experience. This three-to-five-day hike immerses you in the natural beauty of the Andes, connecting you deeply with the wonder of Machu Picchu.

It is vital that all visitors comply with the regulations and protection measures when exploring this sacred historical site. Respecting the rules and prohibitions ensures the preservation of Machu Picchu for future generations. The conservation of this world wonder relies on each traveler’s responsibility. Follow the rules established by the government to help maintain this extraordinary site for others to enjoy. In this way, we can ensure that Machu Picchu remains a treasure for years to come.
Machu Picchu sits at 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level, which is significantly lower than Cusco, at 3,400 meters (11,152 feet). If you’ve already acclimatized in Cusco, you're unlikely to experience altitude sickness at Machu Picchu. However, if you plan to hike Machu Picchu Mountain, the altitude rises to over 3,000 meters (9,842 feet), and Huayna Picchu reaches around 2,700 meters (8,858 feet). You may feel the effects, especially during physical activity. If you're concerned about altitude, take it slow, drink plenty of water, and consider remedies like coca tea, chewing coca leaves, or taking a soroche pill, available in local Peruvian pharmacies. It’s always wise to consult with your doctor before the trip if you have concerns about altitude.
Due to new regulations, you can only enter Machu Picchu in two time slots: 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. If you purchase a morning entrance, you’re unlikely to be asked to leave at midday. During my visit, I stayed from 6:30 a.m. until nearly 4:00 p.m. with a morning entrance ticket and saw no one being asked to leave. While this rule could be enforced in the future, for now, it’s not strictly monitored.
