German athlete Florian Wellbrock won the gold medal in the men's 10-kilometer marathon at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. From the start, he was ahead of his opponents and became the first swimmer to cross the finish line in the race which took place Thursday morning, August 5, 2021.

He was followed by Hungarian swimmer Kristof Rasovszky who won the silver medal in this event. Meanwhile, Italian swimmer Gregorio Paltrinieri won a bronze medal.

Wellbrock set himself apart from the other swimmers early in the race and led the laps around Tokyo's Odaiba Marine Park. He was in stable condition maintaining the lead throughout the race.

Hungarian swimmer Kristof Rasovszky and French swimmer Marc-Antoine Olivier remained close until the end of the race. A small group of swimmers caught up with them along the path as they chased Wellbrock.
Cars and trains glide across the Rainbow Bridge and the five-ring Olympic monument is visible in the distance as athletes swim in the 10km swim which are sometimes startled by fish jumping out of the water.

Temperatures rose throughout the day under cloudless skies and scorching sun heating the water surface where the water temperature reached 29 degrees when the race started at 06.30 local time.

"The first seven kilometers were very easy. The water wasn't very warm, so I kept the pace and the last part went really badly. The temperature today was the biggest competitor. I beat him and I beat everything in this race," said Wellbrock.
