His strong vote during the consultation is the most representative of the Colombian Left, and a reliable candidate for the presidency, despite the fact that his ideas and proposals are controversial on multiple fronts, such as the economic one.

Petro declared his intention to revamp the pension system by the creation of a public manager of the pension funds. The system is expected to be "mixed" and complement the private funds.

gustavo petro stated that Colombia does not have a retirement system, but instead the system is designed to make bank profits. Many believe that this will prevent him from becoming President. Petro has recently said, however, that he wouldn't abolish the system, but would instead seek to reform the pension system in Colombia, in order to achieve an adequate level of pensions for Colombians. Petro further stated that it's not necessary to increase the age at which pensioners can retire.

Another of his controversial issues is that he has repeatedly stated that he would end extraction of oil the moment that he becomes President. gustavo petro has created uncertainty for investors and the market in general.

Experts say Petro's idea of ending oil exploration would have a devastating effect on Colombia which would cost Colombia $4.3 trillion.

This proposal includes the creation an anti-oil front both in the region as well the world that moves the economy away from fossil fuels. I would like to invite Gabriel Boric to Chile and LuizInacio Lula de Silva to join me.

Petro said he recently spoke with the Premier Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, regarding his idea.

His attitude on health issues is also controversial since he has argued on ending EPS and replacing it with a preventive care model that "guarantees the rights of individuals and not the profits of bankers".

There were also questions raised about the independence and legitimacy of the Banco de la Republica.

Petro said that the Bank Board of Directors belongs to the Democratic Center. Accordingly, the candidate at the center of a discussion stated "What do we need? https://caracol.com.co/tag/gustavo_francisco_petro_urrego/a/ run Bank of the Republic (...) It is to me crucial that the board of directors has the presence of the society."

Invamer reports that Petro is the leader in voting intentions for the presidential election.

The idea of releasing money to finance government spending was also controversial.
