How effective is technology in education?

One century later, the internet and digital technology are expected to revolutionise education, with the pandemic providing a context and urgency to it. Placed at the interface of humans and machines, the path for technology in education - ed-tech - is far from seamless. In contrast to the hype surrounding ed-tech, the experiences of teachers and students since March 2020 call for restrained enthusiasm. A lot has been written about students lacking tech devices and struggling with erratic internet connections. According to some internal surveys within IITs and IISERs, 10-20 per cent of students lack access to devices.

There are many benefits of online learning and the main of these is the reach online learning has. Online learning can be a boon for institute as they can now have the reach of all over India. Also, the technological advances have enabled them to afford the needed infrastructure and also the government is encouraging everybody to go digital.

In offline mode there are many problems and the main of these is the problem of reach, you cannot go interstate daily specially for girls and their parents’ distance of school or college from home is always a cause of concern, this concern is not in the case of e-learning. Also, this is the main reason behind the success of e-learning platforms in India that you can learn anything anywhere.

Technology can be very effective in some fields, others are not so clear. I think the problem with online classes is that they are more effective at teaching aspects of technology that are not very useful in real life - like memorizing stuff. The ability to memorize facts and figures is not very useful in real life, which is why we don't do it on purpose. It's related to the fact that I feel that cramming for exams is something that only happens in schools.

But this kind of education does have its benefits. If you are learning something new, it helps to have a teacher who knows what you are doing, so you can ask questions and get feedback. Online classes also have their place, especially for knowledge-oriented subjects like philosophy or history of science where memorization is not an issue. The case for technology is that it provides a powerful way to enable more effective learning. There are two basic reasons to believe this: first, students prefer technology over traditional modes of instruction. Indeed, the most widely used test of student perception of their learning experiences is the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) which reports that 71 percent of students say they are better off with technology than without it.
Second, technology can improve teaching by providing feedback on student performance. Students who use computers in their courses are twice as likely as those who don't to say that they have learned more in their classes. However, although technology can enhance learning, it does not address the critical issue of how to teach effectively in a lecture-based setting.

NPTEL, co-funded by the Department of Science and Technology, is an online educational platform where nearly 100 courses are offered free to more than 20 lakh students. The courses are designed to equip learners with the skills necessary for getting their first job, starting a business or to pursue higher studies.

The NPTEL platform has successfully attracted more than 20 lakh learners every semester. It has succeeded in doing this because it is the only mode of learning that puts knowledge before teaching methods- learning by doing, learning by interacting with experts and peers, learning by experiencing things through simulations. Nowadays how you learn matters more than what you learn.

This growth rides on the back of coaching for fiercely competitive entrance exams such as the IIT-JEE and NEET, rather than as an alternative model for conventional classes. The dichotomy is apparent as many ed-tech companies focus on the coaching classes and online STEM degrees, while the basic school and college classes, often with poor physical infrastructure, await government interventions to infuse technology.

Before the government invests its scarce resources into technology upgradation, the collective experience of online classes must inform policymaking. Many expensive gadgets bought last year did not live up to expectations and were discarded. Ironically, teaching with technology tools is seen as cumbersome, requiring more preparation time without value addition and not always effective for students.

The craze for learning is everywhere is India, the success of students from backward areas are now reaching every nuke and corner of India and motivating everybody reading them. People are now aware of the fact that if they work hard in the field of education then success is confirmed. So, they now looking for the best e-learning platforms so that they or their children can achieve great things and make them and their country proud.

This also put heavy burden on the shoulders of best e learning platforms in India and of the world as they have to give these students and their parents the best available content and in best available format that they can easily learn, understand and apply.

The online engagements since 2020 reveal that technology alone is no panacea for the problems of education. It can be an excellent support system in the hands of competent teachers in a peer learning environment. The little girl in the story discovers that old-style physical school must have been a fun place to learn. Judicious use of technology can preserve the fun in learning. It is imperative to strike a right balance.

So, this is it. There are no shortcuts to success either for the students or for the e-learning platforms, both have to work together and work hard as the relationship between them is symbiotic.Online learning platforms also come with technical aspects that traditional classes may not include. With a variety of courses and multiple ways to connect with the faculty, it is the new way to gain knowledge from the comfort of your home.
