There are four ways in which you can apply to universities in the United States

The Common Application
The common application system is an online platform that allows a student to apply to a maximum of 20 universities at the same time. You will need to fill a form and write an essay of approximately 650 words, to enter yourself into the system. You will still have to write additional essays for each specific university you apply to, but can avoid refilling basic information about yourself, such as your academic credentials and personal information, every time you apply to a university. This can save a lot of time for students. Several Universities in the USA, including all of the Ivy League colleges, use the common application system

Shared Systems Application
A few colleges, such as the California State University and the University of California use a shared system of admissions, whereby you can apply to all colleges under the shared system through a single application. You will still need to provide additional information on each college application to study in USA under the shared system

Individual College Applications
This is the traditional age-old system of application for college admissions in the USA. in this system, you will need to apply to each college individually and provide your details separately for each university that you plan to apply to.

The Coalition Application
The Coalition Application is designed to help students who come from underrepresented and underprivileged backgrounds. The Application aims to improve access and affordability for students applying from underprivileged and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Most of the colleges are represented on both the coalition application and other applications for college admissions. Students can use more than one college application system for applying to the University of their Choice.
