A band saw (or also written as bandsaws) is an industrial machine with long curved tooth cutting blade spinning at high speed on a horizontal wheel fixed in a horizontal table. It's one of the commonly used machine tool found nowadays in woodworking and construction workshop. Basically the work of a band saw is to provide shape to heavy material which has varying irregular look. For this reason the band saw machine is available in many different sizes and models as well as cuts various materials efficiently.

Band saw motor consists of several major parts which includes blade, vise, table and shaft. The blade is generally made up of diamond plate having a flat top surface and straight inside edges. The top surface is designed for cutting materials safely and quickly, while the straight inside edges and flat top are designed for precise cutting. The motor attached with the band saw machine is responsible for the movement of the blade along with the blade slot and cutting direction.

There are two types of horizontal band saw machines, those hydraulic swing beam shear machine and horizontal band machine. Both vertical and horizontal machines operate in the same basic principle of holding the work in a horizontal position and then raising it vertically. However, the main difference between vertical band machine and horizontal band machine is the way they operate and the mechanism that powers them. In vertical machine, the motor is placed on the top side of the vertical shaft. Shaft has parallel metal shaft and it's mounted on top of table.

In metal cutting bandsaw machine, band saw motor is placed on the lower side of the straight line cutting blade. The motor is then connected to the teeth of horizontal blade. When the blade moves, it grips the teeth of straight line cutting blade vertically. So, it's necessary to check the length of the tooth of vertical blade before you start to work on straight line cutting.

As far as the band saw blades are concerned, it's better to use steel band saws. Steel band saws have a good life and you won't find any problem in their moving or stopping operations. However, it's better to use high quality steel for band saws if you want to avoid problems in their moving or stopping operations. If you go for budget band saws, it's better to use plastic or aluminum band saws. They are cheap but they don't offer any guarantee on their workmanship and their cutting speed is very less compared to high quality steel band saws. Still, these are popular band saws for professional woodworkers.

The guide rods of band saw machine play a vital role in the working of these machines. Guides provide information about the distance between the blade and the work piece at a particular distance. These guides are available in two forms - ones that can be attached to the machine and another is that which can be slide mounted. It's better to attach the portable guide rods because they offer higher accuracy than the attached ones. However, they consume more power and they also take much space.
