My Hero Academia: Izuku's Explosive Growth Threatens to Make Class 1-B Obsolete

Izuku becomes My Hero Academia's last big hope against the villain's thanks to One For All, but this doesn't seem to leave any room for Class 1-B.

The star of My Hero Academia's she has always been Izuku Midoriya, but the plot was once defined by his relentless pursuit of his more talented peers and proving himself worthy as a UA student, as well as All Might's extraordinary legacy. Now, however, he's upfront - and that has a price.

Izuku has trained hard, especially with Gran Torino in Season 2, and understands that he needs allies and rivals, not just friends, to reach the top. This paid off in a very big way, and even his One For All Quirk knows it. But the story might diverge a bit if this continued, and Class 1-B, in particular, would pay for it.

Class 1-B's Moments of Glory May Be Too Few, Too Late

Season 5 of My Hero Academia begins with the Joint Training arc, an opportunity for Classes 1-A and 1-B to come together and showcase the abilities of these forty students. The five battles are certainly exciting and prove how far Class 1-B students have come despite Class 1-A's inexperience against real villains. In that sense, this story sequence does its job, but it almost feels as if My Hero Academia is just entertaining Class 1-B, finally disheartening them after being in the background for so long. Many of his students, such as Hiryu Rin, Reiko Yanagi, and Setsuna Tokage, only now get more than a line or two of dialogue.

On the one hand, Class 1-B's glorious moment here feels obligatory, being the first and only chance to show off what they can do before the whole storyline goes in a completely different direction. That's not necessarily a bad thing in itself, and it certainly doesn't mean the Combined Training arc isn't worth watching, but it still doesn't bode well for some characters.

Most importantly, Izuku's rise to fame and her rapidly growing One For All threaten to make this the last time Class 1-B matters at all. As a shining star, Izuku's storyline and struggles must be kept to the fore, and more players may return to the background. When One For All is in the limelight, there is no room for any particular character, now or in the future. Most of the students of Class 1-A became the background in facing the exciting development of One For All.

When One For All Becomes Its Character

One For All is an excellent Quirk in many ways, almost like a living being itself. It was "born" when the younger All For One gave a power-store Quirk to his sickly brother. Since then, One For All has gone from user to user, growing stronger year after year while also having a lot of the natural Quirk factor built into it. In this case, One For All underwent its type of training, and of course, the story of My Hero Academia… would take plenty of time to show the results. Izuku gets a power-up when the Blackwhip Quirk appears, and All Might has mentioned how the fateful time of One For All has arrived. Only Izuku and One For All can fight All For One and Tomura Shigaraki to restore world peace. The plot quickly condenses the battle of good vs. evil into these few characters.

It's understandable that My Hero Academia is poised to get to the heart of its narrative and prepare for the big finale. It would be ridiculous to create a circular plot for 300 episodes before finally taking on the main villain. It's an apt call from a story standpoint, but it comes at a price. The Class 1-B students have shown their talent -- just in time for One For All to take the spotlight and push everyone out of the way. Many Cass 1-A students would likely get the same treatment as well, and even the likes of Shoto Todoroki and Katsuki Bakugo might not be immune to this. Class 1-B was given a bone, then told to clear the field so One For All could become a star player.

This was probably Class 1-B's last chance to shine in a meaningful way at this rate, and it was a real shame. Lots of great characters could hold out for more development before One For All completely takes over the story, but it might be too late. They would likely back off and cheer on Izuku as she finished the battle of good vs. evil alone. Tomura Shigaraki's recent return makes this clear. My Hero Academia's final game is about to start, and they're probably won't be room for most UA sophomores.
