NXP acquires OmniPHY to accelerate the development of autonomous driving and in-vehicle networks

NXP Semiconductors, the world's largest automotive electronics and artificial intelligence IoT chip company, announced the acquisition of OmniPHY, a provider of automotive Ethernet subsystem technology. OmniPHY's expertise includes automotive Ethernet, a technology that enables fast data transfer for automated driving. By combining OmniPHY's advanced high-speed transmission technology with NXP's leading product portfolio and extensive experience in the automotive network, NXP will be the leader in providing next-generation data transmission solutions for automotive manufacturers.

Driven by higher data capacity and speed demands, automotive networks are undergoing a revolution designed to meet the demands of connected vehicles with increasing autonomous driving. The new advanced autopilot system will require data transfer speeds above gigabit. For the next generation of vehicles, the current plan requires more than 8 cameras, high-definition radar, laser radar and V2X functions, which will bring severe data challenges to the current automotive network. These requirements, coupled with the need for modern vehicles to divert data to enable new business opportunities for the Internet of Vehicles, will soon make terabytes of data processing widely available.

Ian Riches, executive director of Strategy Automotive's global automotive business, said: "One of the tricky issues in the autopilot era is how to transfer car-related data as quickly as possible. By 2020, cameras and displays will increase the number of high-speed links in cars to 150 million. By 2030, the number of high-speed links in self-driving car systems will soar to 1.1 billion."

As the autopilot ecosystem struggles to meet emerging automotive data requirements, many manufacturers are beginning to use enterprise network solutions as a temporary measure for functional testing. However, long-term solutions will require automotive grades and size and weight needs to be met for ease of implementation. OmniPHY has begun to provide 1000BASE-T1 automotive Ethernet technology for the automotive sector. By acquiring OmniPHY, NXP will play a pivotal role in this rapidly evolving field.

Alexander E. Tan, vice president and general manager of NXP Automotive Ethernet Solutions, said: "Our experience in the automotive networking market and our leading position in CAN, LIN and FlexRay give us unique insights into the automotive network. And OmniPHY's team and technology fills the gap in our high-bandwidth networking portfolio."

OmniPHY is a pioneer in the field of high-speed automotive Ethernet IP with 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 standard IP in compliance with automotive standards. During its six-year history, OmniPHY has partnered with some of the world's largest consumer goods companies to develop competitive “1st-silicon-right” solutions for emerging markets such as automotive and industrial Ethernet. OmniPHY's interface IP and communication technology and NXP's automotive portfolio will form a one-stop solution for automotive Ethernet. The technical synergies between the two companies will be centered around the 1.25-28Gbps PHY design and 10-, 100- and 1000BASE-T1 Ethernet in the advanced process.

Ritesh Saraf, CEO of OmniPHY, said: "I am very pleased to join NXP. NXP is a leader in automotive electronics. We will work together to seize the opportunities in the autonomous driving revolution and help people change their way of life. Combined with the technology level, we will accelerate and advance the delivery of automotive Ethernet solutions to provide customers with world-class high-quality automotive Ethernet innovations."
