Today, we hear the term "prison-industrial complex" a take-off on the older expression "military-industrial complex," that has been coined by Leader Eisenhower in his televised farewell address to the nation in 1961. The prison-industrial complex refers to companies and governments that build and run prisons and buy or promote things and solutions applied or manufactured in correctional facilities. This "complex" requires an elaborate connection between governments, the correctional techniques they administer, and the individual corporations providing things and companies to correctional facilities.

The term "prison-industrial complex" was supposed as a derogatory term, hinting a motive to incarcerate more offenders. Profiteers and unions addressing correctional officers are accused of encouraging large jail populations to secure their jobs and profits. Modern incarceration is set alongside the exploitation of antebellum slavery. Many prisoner advocates denounce the profiteers of the "prison-industrial complex," and as an alternative need the removal of oppression, injustice, poverty and racism. Most such jail advocates are scared that someone may be creating a profit.

That expression is deceptive, because it means growing industries and the industrious working of jail labor. We don't use "new era slaves" in financial terms. To the contrary, they are the best-supported welfare individuals in the nation. Percentage-wise, very few work full-time, and individual industry is not allowed to fully use or use prison labor. Contemporary socialists complain of this so-called conspiracy, but a fully industrialized jail system is obviously something we want and do not have.

Private correctional corporations replicate the warehousing purpose of prisons and take to to do this at less cost than the usual government-run prison. But they cannot run successful jail industries or make many gains from the job of the prisoners. Over 100 years ago, prisons applied to make profits, but that transformed with the Hawes-Cooper Act of 1929, which took out the interstate commerce status of prison-made things, allowing claims to bar them from sale. Several states then prohibited the purchase of these goods. The Ashurst-Sumners 

Act of 1935, as amended in 1940, prohibited interstate delivery of prison-made goods. In 1936, the Walsh-Healey Act prohibited convict work on federal procurement contracts. Consequently of these appropriate barriers, the prison-industrial complex in general never became very industrious. It has largely been an "industry" of government jobs creating things for the government. We need to repeal those and other statutes to let prisoners to benefit personal corporations or spiritual businesses under any terms the events can negotiate; so long as, prison industries created items today produced entirely overseas.
