"People who play games": gambling and its impact on humans

What is Gambling?
Gambling (from the English. Gambling) - a verb, is a distorted form of the word gaming, "game to win". In his article "Gambling as deviant behavior: psychological and social roots" * Doctor of Sociology Yegor Osipov notes that the main social and personal problems that this phenomenon generates are similar all over the world.

In particular, we are talking about the excessive passion of people for gambling. Sociologists call this behaviour and the associated psychological problems "problem or pathological gambling."

At the same time, as Osipov notes, it is necessary to clearly distinguish gambling, which is generally accepted in society and “problem gambling”.

“The overwhelming majority of players place bets regularly, but for quite understandable and justified reasons, mainly with the aim of distracting themselves from everyday negative emotions: anxiety, depression, anger, envy, fear. It is in this social function that gambling has established itself in almost all Western countries, having received the approval of society and the authorities, ”Osipov writes.

The point is that these players do not have an all-consuming involvement and addiction to gambling. For this group of people, gambling is a part of their leisure time, which does not take away the main strength and does not detract from significant social goals. Renowned sociologist John Rosecrans called this phenomenon “conditional flow behaviour”.
