The initial step in becoming an accountant is to take an introductory course. On this type of course, you will learn how to keep good accounting records and procedures as well as basic cost information required for management accounting.

By the end of the course you will understand how organisations are structured in regards to the main business areas, the computer and accounts systems and the people. You will gain a solid grounding of how accounting affects these functions. Some other core skills you will learn are how to support management in decision-making, analysis and planning.

There are lots of courses throughout the country where you can take an introductory course. The Certificate in Business Accounting is the first part of a series of qualifications known as Foundations in Accountancy which are similar in level to GCSE's and the degree/HND programme. How to progress your basic accountancy career

The ACCA route - ACCA is one accounting body where you can continue your studies with. Those unsure which area of accountancy and which type of organisation to work for, should take this route.

Step 1

If you have taken an introductory course or you already have experience working in accounts, the next step for you to take is the Intermediate Certificate. It covers Recording Financial Transactions, Management Information, Maintaining Financial Records, Managing Costs and Finances. On completion, you can be assured that you will have a respected qualification designed by industry experts that can help you to progress your career and certify your skills. Step 2

The second step in progressing your accounting career and the third step in completing the Foundations in Accountancy qualification is the Diplona ub Accounting and Business.As well as being a great stepping stone towards the main ACCA qualification, it is at an ideal level if you are looking to work in a junior position in accounting, for example bookkeeping. Accountancy qualification s like this are on a par with the first year of a UK bachelor degree.

Step 3

Once you have completed steps 1 and 2 (the Fundamentals level), you have effectively achieved a degree level in accountancy. The next step in your accounting studies is the professional qualification which is equivalent to a master's degree. This is the final piece in the jigsaw and once completed, you can become a professional accountant apply for chartered status.

The CIMA route - another very recognised route is through the Chartered Institute Of Management Accountants. This is relevant if you are looking to support management teams in their decision-making processes and business analysis. Once you have completed and passed The Introductory certificate in Financial and Management Accounting, you can move onto the professional exam. The CIPFA route - if you are looking for a career in the public sector, The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Finance and Accountancyis the route you need to take. The Professional Qualification they offer is a very relevant and robust accountancy qualification for the public services. The skills acquired in this qualification will also be relevant and useful if you decide to switch to the private sector later in your career.
