Security deposit help for single mothers

Several federal agencies can help single moms pay their rent. These programs are not limited to single mothers, and all applicants must have limited income to qualify.

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development provides rental subsidies, which are administered by local housing authorities.

You can call a HUD-approved housing counselor to find out if and where rental subsidy programs are available in your area.

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program
Section 8 of the program provides a rental subsidy for low-income families, including single mothers.

The single mother is responsible for paying 30% of her income for rent.
HUD pays the remainder. To qualify, the mother's income cannot exceed 80% of the area median income, and very low-income families, or 30%, are given priority.

All household members must be U.S. citizens or they will not be eligible to receive the maximum grant payment

Public housing program
The Public Housing Program is similar to Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers, however the tenant can only receive help paying rent for a private home.

If the mother moves to another multi-family home, she will no longer receive a rental subsidy, unless the new unit is also federally supported.

The tenant is still responsible for paying 30% of their income as rent, HUD will pay the remainder. The mother's income cannot exceed 80% of the area median income.

Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Relocation Program
The Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Relocation Program offers help to poor families at risk of homelessness, or those who have already lost their homes. Families experiencing eviction or living in an emergency shelter are eligible for assistance.

Veteran Family Support Services Program
The Department of Veterans Affairs provides veteran single mothers with help paying rent. Families who are homeless or at risk of being left without a home are eligible.
