Spacecraft Leaked, 3 Astronauts Must Stay a Year in Space

One NASA astronaut, Frank Rubio, as well as two Roscosmos cosmonauts, Sergey Prokopyec and Dimitry Petelin, had to live longer in space on the International Space Station (ISS).

Reported by Space.com, the Russian-owned spacecraft on which the three were riding in leaked due to a micrometeroid attack in December 2022. They also had to wait until September this year as a time for preparation and departure of replacement aircraft.

The three astronauts, who departed in September last year, inevitably had to temporarily stay in space for up to a year. By far, the record for the astronaut to ever "live" the longest in space belongs to Mark Vande Hei (355 days) from April 2021 to April 2022. Infia Techno Source

"The plan is that Frank, Dimitri and Sergey will remain on board for a few more months until they return home, possibly (at the end of) September, Dina Contella, NASA's ISS Operations Integration Manager, said in a statement.

The three men failed to get home in time because their vehicle lost all its coolant after a micrometeorid attack that leaked the Russian spacecraft and created a precarious situation on the probe.

Frank, Dimitri, and Sergey had to wait until their replacement vehicle arrived on the ISS. To prepare and launch it there took a long time, so the three stayed longer in space.

"We're looking at the right time for that, but at this point, that's when the vehicle is planned to go home," Contella said.

With the schedule change, the MS-22 crew will be on duty in a vacuum residence for a full year since their departure into space.

However, neither Frank, Dimitri, nor Sergey are astronauts nor cosmonauts who have lived in space the longest.

Because, the record is still held by Mark Vande Hei who stayed for 355 days between April 2021 and April 2022. Then, there is also Scott Kelly and cosmonaut Mikhail Korneinko who recorded themselves for 340 days in space between March 2015 and March 2016.

Christina Koch holds the record for the longest-serving female astronaut in space, where she lived around the Earth for 329 days from April 2019 to February 2020.
