A bolt is a threaded shaft mechanical fastening. Bolts and screws are mechanical fasteners with threaded shafts that are strongly linked. In most cases, these fasteners are placed via two components with linked holes.

Depending on how something is applied, it might be classified as a bolt or a screw, according to alternate meanings. The unthreaded cone allows a more precise and less abrasive interaction with the more precision pieces. Because the shank lacks the stress concentration that might contribute to failure, it's critical to apply a large shear force to the bolt, causing the shank to extend considerably beyond the connection among both the components.

The hex bolt is the most frequent type of bolt. This features a hexagonal head that provides flat surfaces for applying torque while attaching. For earlier bolts, a square head was utilised, which is still used today for applications that need a lot of torque to be exerted with a wrench.
