The Difference Between Organic Green Tea and Organic Black Tea

Both green tea and black tea is widely popular over the world and is consumed in large volumes. While both are beneficial to human health largely, they do have intrinsic differences among them. The difference lies in the way they are processed, the way they taste, kind of nutrients they carry, how they are brewed etc. Let us have a look in detail the basic differences between organic green tea and organic black tea.

They are processed differently

Green tea and black tea are processed very differently. The biggest difference between the two is the level of oxidation they experience. Oxidation in this case means exposing the tea leaves to oxygen for a period of time. In the case of green tea, immediately after harvest, the leaves are heated to ensure minimal levels of oxidation. This ensures that green tea retains a lot of nutrients and enjoys a bright green color. Black tea on the other hand undergoes a long oxidation process which makes the leaves brown or black in color

They are brewed differently

Organic green tea is brewed differently from organic black tea. The perfect way to brew a cup of green tea is to heat around 225 ml of water to as high as 80 degrees Celsius till it starts to boil. After that, pour it on around 2.5 – 3 grams of green tea leaves and allow it to brew for 3 minutes. Green tea is generally consumed with lemon and/or honey. Milk is widely not accepted for consumption with green tea.

Black tea is brewed by heating 225 ml of water at around 100 degrees Celsius and then poured over 2.5 grams of black tea leaves and allowed to brew for around 4 minutes, and then poured in a cup. Black tea can be had with a variety of things as per choice such as lemon, sugar, spices, milk, etc.

They look and taste different

Tea lovers generally can easily tell the difference between green and black tea by just looking at it. Green tea carries a light color that ranges from being pale green to mossy green and have veggie and oceanic notes in terms of taste. Chinese green tea tends to be lighter in color than Japanese green tea which is a much darker green. Black tea is much darker donning a reddish or a more copper coloured brew. They carry a stronger flavor with notes of honey, malt, etc.

They have different nutrient constituents

Due to the minimal levels of oxidation that organic green tea is subjected to, they are an excellent source of EGCG (Epigallocatechin-3-gallate), a very potent anti-oxidant. While it contains other beneficial polyphenols like catechin and gallic acid, EGCG is considered to be by far the greatest health benefit agent in green tea. EGCG in green tea helps prevents Cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Fatigue, Liver damage, virus transmission, and also aids in weight loss and helps in obesity management.

Organic black tea on the other hand, apart from enjoying a higher caffeine content than green tea, are an excellent source of theaflavins, which is a group of polyphenols unique to black tea and formed during the long oxidation process. Theaflavins have multiple health benefits, all because of their antioxidant characteristic. Theaflavins provides a lot of health benefits such as protect far cells from free radicals, reduce inflammation, reduce cholesterol and blood sugar, and also help in obesity management.
