The Disadvantages of Attending College Online

While online colleges have their advantages, attending college on the Internet also has its drawbacks, especially for those considering post graduate study.
Online colleges and universities are becoming more and more popular as people work towards completing a college degree or furthering their post secondary education. While attending college online has its advantages when need to write my essays online, there are also several major disadvantages to heading to the computer instead of the lab, classroom, or lecture hall.

Disadvantages of Online Colleges

For students who like or need face-to-face interaction with classmates and professors, online colleges have a huge disadvantage over traditional colleges and universities. Online students have little to no interaction with other students in their classes or programs, or with faculty and staff members. This poses a problem for students who need that social interaction or face time with faculty and students in order to grasp concepts and master material, says College Tool Kit.

Sometimes, students may find that select professors provide students with their home telephone number or a way of contacting them besides email, but for the most part, students will have to resort to emailing a professor or classmates if a student has problems with course material. If a student has technical problems, there may be problems getting hands-on technical support with lessons or course materials, and the only way to contact the college or university's technical support center is through email.

Finding Financial Aid for Online Colleges and Universities

While attending online colleges and universities are generally less expensive than attending a traditional college or university, it is usually harder to find financial aid to pay for the cost of attendance of online colleges and universities due to accreditation status or a lack of financial aid program. Students may also find that scholarships offered through local organizations, labor unions, or professional groups do not include attendance at online colleges and universities.

For high school students considering an online college or university, a high school guidance counselor or career counselor may be able to guide students towards financial aid, scholarships, and grants tailored specifically for online college students. For current college students, financial aid counselors at local colleges and universities may be able to provide resources for financial aid.

If an online college or university does provide financial assistance for students, it is possible that aid awards will not cover the entire cost of attendance, books, and fees. Student loans, depending on the initial lender, may or may not be able to be used to cover the remaining balance.

Online Colleges or Universities Require A Large Time Investment

One of the perks of online colleges and universities is that students are able to work on class work at their own pace and on their own time, but for students who have trouble managing their time, the work-as-you-go atmosphere may be more of hindrance than a benefit.

According to Write My Essay website, students who have poor time management skills or are forgetful may want to consider a traditional college or university instead of an online institution because of a more structured environment. Online colleges require that students keep their own schedule and complete tasks and assignments without someone else, such as a professor or classmates, motivating a student to get work done.

According to college essay writer Edward Attwell's research, online courses often have specific time frames for tests, quizzes, or special assignments. If students do not complete and submit the assignment within the time frame the instructor has provided, then the student will only receive partial credit for the assignment or a failing grade. For students who tend to be forgetful, online courses may not be the best option when it comes to higher education.

While online colleges and universities have their advantages for students who are looking to continue their education or to obtain a college degree, there are also drawbacks for students who need a more structured environment in which to learn. Even though online colleges and universities may offer students an alternative to traditional colleges and universities, students who are looking for the traditional college experience may want to consider their options before enrolling in an online school.
