The Lion King: The Origin Of The Scar Name Is So Dark

Scar, the infamous villain from The Lion King has two different backgrounds.

The Lion King is one of the most beloved Disney films of all time, and one of the most memorable aspects of this film is its villain, Scar. The character is voiced by Jeremy Irons in the original animated film and by Chiwetel Ejiofor in the 2019 remake. The scar is Simba's dangerous uncle who kills Mufasa early in the film, triggering a series of events that lead to the final battle to become king of the Pride Land. The scar is an instantly recognizable villain thanks to his signature design, which of course includes the scar on his left eye. Neither of the films goes into great detail about Scar's background or how he got his scar, but two different explanations are offered in other entries of The Lion King franchise, and both are very dark.

The Lion King's Scars Used To Be Taka
Although non-canonical, the first explanation comes from the children's book A Tale of Two Brothers, the first entry in Disney's The Lion King: Six New Adventures spinoff series. The story follows Mufasa and his brother, named Taka in the book, in their early years before the events of the film. Just like in the movie, Taka is jealous of Mufasa because he is next in line for the throne. His jealousy led him to trick Mufasa into fighting with a herd of cape buffalo. Unfortunately for Taka, the situation is reversed and he is the one who ends up being attacked, causing Mufasa to have to save him. The attack left Taka badly injured, including the infamous scar on his left eye. After being reprimanded for his actions by his father, Raja Ahadi, Taka asked to be called "Scar" since then as a reminder of his wrongdoing.

The Lion King's Scar Was Once Askari
A second explanation comes from Disney's The Lion Guard, an animated sequel series from Disney Junior that just ended in 2019. In the series, Scar was originally named Askari and was the leader of the Lion Guard, a group of lions. dedicated to protecting the Pride Lands. As a leader, Askari was awarded the Roar of the Elders, a powerful roar that attracted the Great Lions of the Past to produce a powerful and devastating effect. One day, Askari is lured into a trap by a mischievous lion who poisons him with a cobra bite in his eye. The lion offers Askari medicine in exchange for his loyalty, but an enraged Askari uses a roar to kill the lion and cobra.

After the attack, Mufasa taunts Askari for being attacked and gives him the nickname "Scar" as a joke. This made Scar hate his older brother and eventually led him to try and usurp the throne. Scar even used Roar to kill those who got in his way, including the other members of the Lion Guard. But the Great Lion was not happy about this and took Roar from Scar, forcing him to retreat from the Pride Lands.
