Ethyl acetate is an organic compound, which is highly flammable in nature. It is usually found in a colourless liquid state and can be characterised by a sweet smell (fruity smell). Ethyl acetate is widely utilised as a solvent for paints, varnishes, cleaning mixtures, perfumes, and more. In a lab, ethyl acetate is a common solvent used in thin-layer and column chromatography.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ethyl acetate market faced a major drawback globally. China kept its operations to the minimum to keep a balance between supply and demand, creating a downward pressure on spot prices in the region. India also kept its supply limited to other nations in Europe. The production of ethyl acetate was also forced to dampen as more feedstock industrial ethanol was being used to make sanitisers, which left very little to produce ethyl acetate. However, the demand for ethyl acetate grew with the demand for packaging in the month of April in 2020. Thus, countries across the globe shifted some amount of industrial ethanol towards the production of ethyl acetate to meet the re-surging demand. These factors are expected to influence the production cost for ethyl acetate.

The production cost report by Procurement Resource assesses the production of via Fischer Esterification reaction, via dehydrogenation of ethanol, and via Tishchenko reaction. One of the most common processes to produce ethyl acetate is through the Fischer Esterification reaction. In this process, ethyl acetate is synthesised by the reaction of ethanol and acetic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst like sulphuric acid, yielding about 65% ethyl acetate ester at room temperature.
