Why is Eye Health Important?

Eye health is crucial for everyone, but it is essential for people in the transportation industry. There are very tight laws for driving with vision issues, regardless of the type of vehicle. For example, if you need glasses or contact lenses when going, you must always wear them. It is also criminal to fail to notify the DVLA of a problem that glasses or contacts cannot remedy. For a professional driver, breaching these guidelines while on a haulage assignment is dangerous and may also result in punishment.

HGV Driver Requirements

Drivers of large vehicles, such as buses and lorries, must adhere to strict guidelines.

To drive lawfully, haulers, for example, must have a visual acuity of at least 0.8 (6/7.5) in one eye and 0.1 (6/60) in the other. You can wear contacts or glasses if you don't meet these requirements naturally.

If you, like many others, fail to understand these technical words, it's necessary to seek the advice of an expert to ensure your safety on the road - and that's where the Vision Van comes in.

Keep an eye out for the Vision Van.

The Vision Van has begun its journey nationwide, delivering free eye exams to the general population. The organizers of the RHA-Vision Express collaboration anticipate that this effort will help place the common condition glaucoma at the top of health specialists' agendas.

Glaucoma, which can drastically impair a patient's vision, can only be diagnosed by a test. The term refers to several distinct disorders that cause damage to the optic nerve. Although sight loss cannot be repaired once identified, further degeneration can be prevented with eye drops or laser treatment. The free examinations will also determine whether people must wear glasses or change their prescriptions.

According to Richard Burnett, chief executive of the RHA, haulage livelihoods rely on good vision. Nonetheless, he is concerned that many drivers disregard vision problems when working in freight employment."Although it is simple to diagnose, many drivers are afraid to approach an optician," Burnett said.

The RHA hopes that Vision Van will motivate haulers to take better care of their eyes by making an optician more accessible and promoting the idea that good eye health may extend their working lives. So watch for the Vision Van as it travels across the country.
