When Spider-Man first appeared in the early 1960s, teens in superhero comic books were usually relegated to the sidekick role to the protagonist. The Spider-Man series solves the problem by featuring Peter Parker, the high school student behind Spider-Man's secret identity and with his "self-obsessed with discovery, incompetence, and loneliness" so young readers can relate.[1] While Spider-Man has all the talent of a sidekick, unlike earlier teen heroes like Bucky and Robin, Spider-Man doesn't have superhero mentors like Captain America and Batman; thus he must learn for himself that "with great power there must also be great responsibility"– a line that was included in the text box in the first Spider-Man ending panel but was later replaced by their guardian, the late Uncle Ben. .

Spider-Man is one of the most popular and commercially successful superheroes.[2] As a Marvel character and mascot, he has appeared in countless forms of media, including several animated and live-action television series, syndicated newspaper comic strips, and in film. The character was first portrayed in live action by Nicholas Hammond in the television film Spider-Man in 1977. In the film, Spider-Man is portrayed by actors Tobey Maguire (2002–2007) and Andrew Garfield (2012–2014),[3] while Tom Holland portrays the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, first appearing in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. Reeve Carney played Spider-Man in the 2010 broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.[4] Spider-Man has been well received as a superhero and comic book character and is usually ranked as one of the greatest comic book characters of all time alongside Marvel Comics.

Spider-Man's real name is Peter Parker. He lives with his uncle and aunt in an apartment in Queens, Manhattan. Since childhood he has liked his neighbor named Mary Jane Watson. When he first became Spider-Man, he visited an institute owned by Norman Osborn. A radioactive spider bites him which then makes Peter have super spider powers. In the story Spider-Man (also commonly abbreviated as "Spidey").

Spider-Man has many supporting characters introduced in the comics that are important in the issues and storylines that star in it. After his parents died, Peter Parker was adopted by his loving aunt, May Parker, and his father and uncle, Ben Parker. After Uncle Ben is killed by a thief, Aunt May is Peter's family, she and Peter are very close.[5]

J. Jonah Jameson is described as the publisher of the Daily Bugle and is Peter Parker's boss and a staunch critic of Spider-Man, always saying negative things about superheroes in the newspapers. Despite his role as Jameson's publishing editor and his confidant Robbie Robertson has always been portrayed as a supporter of Peter Parker and Spider-Man.[6]

Eugene "Flash" Thompson is usually depicted as a bully and bully Parker in high school, but in another comic issue later he became Peter's friend.[6] Meanwhile, Harry Osborn, son of Norman Osborn, is best known as Peter's best friend but is also sometimes depicted as his rival in the comics.[7]

Peter Parker's romance ranges from his first love, fellow high school student Liz Allan,[6] to his first date with Betty Brant,[8] secretary of the Daily Bugle newspaper publisher J. Jonah Jameson. After breaking up with Betty Brant, Parker eventually fell in love with his college girlfriend Gwen Stacy,[7][9] the daughter of New York City Police Department Captain George Stacy, both of whom were later killed by Spider-Man's foes.[10] Mary Jane Watson eventually became Peter's best friend and later his wife.[11] Felicia Hardy, Black Cat, is a reformed thieving cat who was Spider-Man's girlfriend and partner in one place.
