The first thing you have to do is to use the identification charts. Having a gemstone identification chart will come in handy to identify green amethyst raw. It will be a worthwhile investment if you will be identifying the gemstones often. Make sure that the chart has been endorsed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The online charts are less detailed but will help you to identify the genuine amethyst.

To identify if you have a gemstone, you need to feel the stone’s surface. If the stone has a rough surface, then it only means that it is not a gemstone. The next thing you need to check is the malleability. A stone which is easy to shape by crushing or hammering is also not an actual gemstone. A real gemstone is one with crystalline structure. Such a structure can be shaped through fracturing and cutting on altered by pressure.

The next thing you have to do is to make basic observations. Look at the color of the gemstone. You should also observe the transparency of the green tourmaline. The transparency refers to how the light filters through the gemstone. The green amethyst raw can be classified as being opaque, translucent and transparent. The transparent stones are the one which you can completely see through. Translucent stones are seeing through and opaque stones are those which you cannot be seen through. You also need to note the cut. The cut may not be a fool proof way to identify the real gemstone but there are some gemstones for sale which have specific cuts. Most common cuts are tumbled, cabochon, bead, cameo and faceted.

Finally, you can study the gemstone in detail. Check the cubic zirconia stones optical phenomenon. The optical phenomenon can only occur inside certain stones. You may observe the asterism, color change and bands of moving light. To check for the optical phenomenon, you have to pass a pen light across the surface of the stone. Look for the color change which is a optical phenomenon. You should also look for the luster which refers to the green amethyst value and intensity. To check for luster, you should turn the stone and allow light to reflect on its surface. Determine if the stone looks shiny, dull, waxy, glass like, silky or metallic.
