What is SD-WAN: A next-generation communication architecture that goes one step further

SD-WAN solutions transform enterprise WAN and multi-cloud connectivity to transform your organization's business and deliver superior application performance at the WAN edge of branch sites. SD-WAN uses a centralized management mechanism to determine and route optimal traffic paths (MPLS, 3G / 4G, broadband), enabling fast and easy access to business-critical cloud applications.

Traditional hub-and-spoke WAN architectures used slow, high-cost MPLS connections that did not provide a good user experience, especially for cloud-based applications. In such a legacy WAN architecture, when a user visits a website, traffic first reaches the security stack and then to the application over the WAN. Therefore, it cannot meet the needs of remote users who want to use the same high-speed broadband connection as at home at work.

Evolving traditional WAN architectures with SD-WAN enables migration of older MPLS services and direct Internet access. SD-WAN solutions not only take advantage of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications, public cloud applications, and unified communications, but also reduce total cost of ownership (TCO).
