Important Maintenance Tips For Industrial Gearbox

Regular maintenance is the key to ensuring the long-lasting performance of your industrial gearbox. Preventive and proactive maintenance helps prevent downtime of gearboxes used in industrial facilities. In this post, I will cover easy-to-use proactive maintenance tips for industrial gearboxes.

The best maintenance tips for industrial gearboxes

Here are some easy maintenance tips to help keep your industrial gearbox in good working condition.

Store the industrial gearbox in a dry place:
This is a very important requirement. The gearbox should be stored in a dry place to reduce the likelihood of non-working parts. Clean the storage area and equipment regularly. You can easily reduce your environmental footprint by keeping your equipment and work environment free of dust, dirt, and debris. Always clean the gearbox inspection port before preparing for inspection. Magnetic debris collector and filter elements are also inspected. Make sure the gearbox works according to the manufacturer's

specifications:-
Make sure the gearbox is being used according to the manufacturer's recommended thermal and mechanical ratings. In most cases, the gearbox will operate above the manufacturer's recommended rating, and with a higher power than recommended. This affects the performance of the equipment and shortens its shelf life.

Regular temperature monitoring:-
The temperature of the gearbox should be monitored regularly to prevent overheating. Also, check temperature fluctuations. Signs of overheating include foamed sight glass, discoloration of the housing, burned paint marks on the housing, and deformed plastic parts. You can do a quick test to check for overheating. Water the gearbox and check for evaporation, boiling, or crushing. When the water disappears, the gearbox has overheated. You can also find signs of holes in the gear teeth. Pitting is defined as surface pressure. You can correct the surface pressure of the gear teeth by reducing the weight and speed. Don't forget to inspect the shaft, magnetic plug, and bearing as part of preventive maintenance.

Check breather:-
It seems that dirt, moisture, and debris always enter the gearbox through the breather. To avoid this, use the correct type of breather.

Lubricate regularly:-
This is one of the main steps in preventive maintenance. Always use the lubricant grade and appropriate amount recommended by the manufacturer. The choice of lubricant depends on the temperature and season. Measure the pressure in the lubricant and check for signs of insufficient lubrication in the sight glass or oil leaks in the shaft seal. Oil leaks indicate that the seal may not function properly and needs replacement.

Perform Vibration Analysis:
Most gearboxes operate in noisy environments, so noise fluctuations may not be noticeable. Unusual noise can suggest damaged parts. Regular vibration analysis of gears and internal bearings can be performed to check for misalignment of gears, cracks in elements, etc.
