7 ways to stay safe when using ATMs

ATMs make life so much more convenient. Plenty of people take these machines for granted. But having access to one means you won’t have to go to the bank and suffer through long, snaking queues to the counter just to withdraw money or check how much balance you still have in your account. An ATM lets you do that with ease. Before you insert your card in that slot to withdraw some cash, though, make sure you’re safe. Here are some questions you’ll want to ask to help you figure out if that machine is safe to use or if you should check out other options.

Is it in a Good Location?

When you pick an ATM machine, take the time to consider its surroundings. Is it in a well-lighted area? Is the area busy, even after nightfall? You’ll want to look around as well and check if there’s a CCTV. Are there any signs that the machine has been vandalized or mistreated? If so, then you’ll want to move to another ATM.

Are There False Fronts?

Some fraudsters put fake fronts over the card slot to skim your details or copy your information. Some even go so far as to put a small camera inside the hole in the wall or above the keypad. That’s to record you putting in your PIN. Be on the lookout for these, then. If you see anything that seems like it has been stuck on, it probably has been. Steer clear of that machine.

Does the Owner Know?

Let the owner know. Warn others, too. Report your concerns so that no one else will fall prey to these fraudsters. That way, the owner can take steps to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

Are you Going with a Friend?

If you’re going to withdraw cash, it’s a good idea to take a friend with you. If you feel uneasy, having someone with you can be a good deterrent against possible assailants. Two is better than one. You’ll less likely to be mugged when you have someone with you since two people are harder to fight off than one.

Do You Protect Your Pin?

When you enter your PIN, make sure you place a hand over the keypad. That should serve as a shield, so it won’t be easy for others to find out what your PIN is. If there are too many people close to you, it might not be a good idea to input your PIN just yet. Ask them to step back. They shouldn’t even be that close, considering the social distancing rules these days.

Do You Ask Strangers for Help?

If your card gets stuck in the slot, use your mobile phone or ask security to come over. Don’t leave your card there. If you have a friend with you then your friend can stay and watch over the machine while you report the incident and ask for help. Strangers might offer to help, but it’s better to stay on the safe side of things and decline. Let the bank staff handle it for you.
