Tips for Switching to Pot-Limit Omaha

For decades Texas Holdem has been without a doubt the most popular online poker variant in the world. However, that has not always been the case. Before Texas Holdem was the most played game, it was Seven Card Stud and before that Draw Poker. At the moment there seems to be some kind of turnaround on the way as Pot Limit Omaha has been growing in popularity in recent years and it could be that in a while more people will be playing Omaha than they will be playing Texas Holdem . That is why we thought it would be a good idea to give you some tips if you want to switch to Pot Limit Omaha.

Before we really get started, let's kick in the open door. Omaha is a different game from Holdem, although there are some similarities. So first study the rules of Omaha, where you start with four cards in your starting hand instead of two. In addition, Omaha is usually played in Pot Limit and not in No Limit, so keep this in mind.

Start small

If you are going to play online poker game for real money, start with low stakes. It's even smart to start with lower stakes than the lowest takes you play Holdem for. While this tip may always be smart, it is certainly true when switching from Hold'em to Omaha. You will notice that your bankroll will fluctuate a lot more in Omaha than in Holdem. In part, this is because you have four cards instead of two. As a result, you often have a draw that makes it worthwhile to call a bet.
However, another important reason why your bankroll fluctuates more is that players will be more inclined to gamble and will also hit something on the river that may turn out to be higher than your own hand. Omaha remains a skill game, just like Holdem, but the gambling element is slightly greater in Omaha.

Starting hand is very important

As mentioned, your starting hand in Omaha does not consist of two, but four cards. Many people think that this gives you more options and that you can see many more hands as good starting hands. However, the opposite is true. Your starting hand is even more important in Omaha than in Holdem. Good Omaha starting hands meet very different criteria than good Holdem starting hands. On various websites and in poker books such as Super / System you can find detailed explanations about the starting hands of Omaha.
Players starting with Omaha would do well to play only a small number of starting hands at the beginning. So that they first understand why those hands are so good and of course also get to know the game itself well. Definitely stay away from small pairs or low connectors at first. Especially in the beginning it is better to play too tight than too loose.

Position

Our last tip is about position. Now every online poker player knows that position is important. That is also the case with Holdem. But with Omaha this is even more important than with Holdem. This is partly because your starting hands are worth a little less, but also because you play Pot Limit and so you can only make a really big bet in the later positions to claim the pot when there are many people in it. After all, there is no way to quickly go all-in somewhere. So play as much as possible from the button or the second to last position. Try to avoid playing in the first positions altogether. Especially in the beginning.
Furthermore, with Omaha it is like all forms of poker. You can read a lot about it, but only by playing the game a lot can you get good at it.
