The smart city project started by xo Sidewalk Labs, a Google subsidiary to track mobility patterns in the US city of Portland, has now been suspended.Last year, Sidewalk also scrapped ambitious projects to build a digital city in Toronto following conflicts about the size of the plans.Portland insists the project will no longer go ahead.Sidewalk said the latest project is in the hands of a separate Replica company.
Replica told the BBC it was reluctant to share information at the level of detail the city requested. At Replica, we believe that better insights shouldn't come with privacy.

We're reluctant to compromise on our privacy principles, which disappoint our Portland Metro customers and ultimately lead to the end of the project. In a statement, Metro, the city authority responsible for the project, told the BBC: "After reviewing the draft data, Metro terminated its relationship with Replica. Metro did not pay Replica for any service. The best too Future work Sidewalk Labs began testing location information software in Portland in May 2019, and the Replica product became a spin-off company in September of that year.

This software uses non-personally identifiable mobile location data to show how people move through cities. The plan is to use data to make policy decisions about where, how and when to build bike lanes in road repairs and to ensure efficient bus service and reach all communities. But Fast Company reports there are concerns about the lack of transparency about the way the technology works. And RedTailMedia, which juxtaposed that the project had been canceled, refer "Damaged data and trust disputes"

'Lab rats'

Data collection and an awareness of the lack of transparency was also a concern when Sidewalk Labs signed a massive deal to restore the abandoned waterfront area in Toronto. The vision is to create a city full of technology, from wooden skyscrapers to autonomous cars and heated sidewalks. Much of the plan rests on gathering massive amounts of data from sensors around the area, where relevant public lobby groups question the necessity. They likened themselves to "guinea pigs" in urban experiments. And an independent committee set up to scrutinize the plan said some of their ideas appeared to be. "Technology for the benefit of technology"

Have questions about how to trade in the first place.Sidewalk Labs unexpectedly announced that the ambitious plans would be scrapped in May last year, citing "Unprecedented economic instability" after the coronavirus outbreak But many see it as an excuse to end projects that have been forced to downsize significantly.Much of the controversy stemmed from the question of whether cities should strike deals with larger companies such as Alphabet, the parent company of both Google and Sidewalk Labs.

At the time, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association said it was "inappropriate" for a company like Google to design a privacy policy to regulate urban neighborhoods.Following the project's failure, Sidewalk Labs established separate companies and entities looking at different aspects of a smart city, including:Delve - A company that uses AI software to design urban landscapes. The department looked at the wooden factory building.Pebble, a budget car sensor to provide "Better parking"One department is looking for ways to reduce electricity costs.
