The Great Gama Early Life and Training

Produced on 22nd May 1878 in a Kashmiri household in Jabbowal, Lahore, British Indian Empire, "The Great Gama" Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt was amongst the best wrestlers of the age before independence who had won numerous spells, beating legendary wrestlers from all over the globe and remained undefeated in his 50 years career span. The most renowned martial artist Bruce Lee was an avid fan of the Good Gama and used to practice his training routines. Even today, Gama's doughnut-shaped exercise disc called "Hasli", where he used to practice, is kept at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) Museum at Patiala.

Gama's first coach was his dad, who was also an avid wrestler of his time but following his demise, the Maharaja of Datia took him to train under his wing. Gama's knack started to amaze everyone in the village and from the time he was 10; he became well-known because of his wrestling stints. At the age of 17, Gama contested the middle-aged Indian wrestling winner Raheem Bakhsh Sultani Wala with whom he battled for hours and the match ended in a draw.

At the time when he was in London, Gama issued a struggle from the wrestling giantsspecifically Stanislaus Zbyszko and Frank Gotch that he would either defeat them or return to the house, paying off the prize money of the struggle. On the first day, he drifted down among the dominant wrestlers Benjamin Roller along with the second day, defeated 12 wrestlers assuring an entrance at the official tournament. In September 1910, Garmin Connect Bluetooth Sync Issues The Great Gama fought with Stanislaus Zbyszko at the finals of the John Bull World Championships in which the latter was trapped and stayed immovable for more than two hours and the game resulted in a draw.

Among the most recognised accomplishments of Gama Pehalwan is the 1200 pound rock that he lifted solely on 23rd December 1902 during his Baroda visit for a wrestling competition. To the surprise of most of us, the stone required 25 guys to be raised that Gama lifted alone. The rock is retained in the Baroda Museum as his symbol of strength.
