Strategic Thinking is a broad term that encompasses many different areas of study, but it has been identified as a valuable tool for improving many business and government processes. Often, the best courses for developing a good strategic thinking approach are those that have a focus on strategic planning. While many think of strategic planning as a "thing" to be done in the future, this is simply not the case. Strategic thinking can be a valuable part of every day operations, even during a company's annual performance review.

Strategic Thinking is based on the idea that the most successful businesses and governments in history have all possessed a sound strategic planning process. They recognized their goals and set a course of action to achieve them. They carefully considered the alternatives and adjusted course as circumstances occurred. They were not afraid to take risks or change course if necessary. As you develop your own strategic thinking skills, you will come to recognize these key elements of sound strategic planning. As you do so, you will also come to understand that it is necessary to include a Planning and Management Process (PMP) in any strategy.

A good way to think about strategic planning is to consider the fact that it is much more than simply deciding what to do "tomorrow." Many companies make the mistake of planning for today instead of tomorrow. They often fail to fully evaluate and assess the important variables that affect their future.

For example, even if a company makes a great deal of money today, it still may be ill-prepared to deal with a major unexpected downturn in business, or to deal with natural disasters that threaten its supplies. Even when a company succeeds in the short term, it may not necessarily succeed in the long term. Strategic Thinking training should therefore examine how to identify and plan for the future. It should emphasize the importance of analyzing and evaluating all possible scenarios and their effect on the company's future viability and success.

Some of the most successful companies in the world are those that possess a high degree of strategic thinking and implementation of plans. They understand that thoughtfully considering and carefully planning for the future is one of the keys to their long term success. It is therefore not surprising that many large corporations regularly undergo such training programs.

While thinking analyzes and examines a variety of factors and scenarios, strategic thinking training tends to be centered around just two issues. These two issues are "what" and "why." Just as the human mind is only able to grasp and comprehend two things at a time, a company only can make one decision at a time by focusing on "Why." Why is it that an organization needs to develop strategic thinking?

The reason why a company must have a strategic thinking process is because the survival of the company depends upon it. If the company does not have a way to discern and decide upon "Why" it will be doomed to fail. Without this "why," the company cannot develop strategic plans that will allow it to survive and thrive. Just as no one can cook a delicious meal without first knowing what ingredients go into it, no one can successfully develop a robust and profitable business without first figuring out "Why."

Strategic thinking training focuses on both "Why" and "What." A company cannot successfully pursue a goal like becoming a global leader without first understanding and discovering "Why." A company cannot effectively sell a product or a service to consumers around the world without having a solid understanding of why they are doing so. Without "Why," a company cannot effectively implement a plan or create a strategy to solve its problems. Therefore, a company that trains its employees in strategic thinking will be more likely to succeed than one that does not.
