Cremation services are provided by either a funeral home or crematory and include all of the various details and costs associated with memorializing a loved one. During a time of grief, knowing what to expect and what to ask at a funeral home or crematory is not necessarily common knowledge. Whether you intend to have simple or elaborate cremation arrangements, keep some of the following tips in mind as you embark on this difficult process.

The News (Good and Bad) About Cremation Services

The bad news is that some funeral homes are, unfortunately, known for overcharging their clients. The good news is that all funeral homes are legally required to provide you with a general price list so that you may see each line item cost. This will help you in determining all the charges associated with cremation.

Types of Charges Associated with Cremation Services

Though the final list of cremation costs will vary based on your location, budget, and preferences, the following is a guide to some of the costs you can expect to see. Be sure to ask which services are required to meet your wishes; oftentimes, services are "included" in the pricing, but not absolutely necessary. For example - many funeral homes will encourage embalming, while it is not required or necessary in many states and circumstances.

  • Funeral home/crematory costs- There is a cost for a casket, even for cremation (in which the body is placed when it is cremated). If you choose to store the remains in a columbarium or bury the urn in a plot, there will be costs associate with these options. Funeral homes will also have costs associated with the transfer of the body and/or cremated remains, memorial or funerary services.
  • Cremation urn costs- While cremation is considered to be one of the most affordable end-of-life options, the cremation urn itself can range from $100 to $3,000 and more. Urn selection will be determined by the kind of urn you wish to use to memorialize your loved one, so this cost will likely be the most variable element in the cremation services.
  • "Disbursement" costs - These fees include the money paid by the funeral home or crematory to third-party vendors, for items such as death certificates, obituary notices, flowers for memorial services, gratuity for clergy, etc.
