Why The Conjuring 3 is MUCH better than El conjuro 3

Horror movie fans have a world of possibilities for entertainment in The Conjuring 3 . In all the films of this franchise, demonic beings and creatures have always appeared that have filled all hearts with fear. However, in the last edition, there was a change that surprised everyone.

While The Conjuring 3 received praise for its demonic tale told through the perspective of Ed and Lorraine Warren's love affair, it is not the first possession film to accomplish this feat, nor is it the best. Based on two acclaimed supernatural investigators by some - and viewed as lying charlatans and sexual predators by others - the Conjuring franchise often paints Ed and Lorraine's relationship and their vast knowledge of the occult as unmatched.

However, The Exorcist III offers a deeper and more complete possession story, based on the love between Father Dyer and Lieutenant William F. Kinderman. Written and directed by William Peter Blatty of The Exorcist , The Exorcist III produces more chills than The Conjuring 3 through its subversion of Catholic iconography and the invisible nature of evil. Furthermore, it shows how a relationship forged through trauma can also be healing.

Fifteen years after the death of Father Karras in The Exorcist 1973 The Exorcist III informs the viewer that Father Dyer and Lt. Kinderman have created a ritual meeting on the anniversary of the death of Karras to remember. In this way, the film acts as a direct sequel to the first film that has its roots in its tragedy: the inability to save Karras from possession.

For starters, this premise of two men continuing a friendship creates a unique premise that feels more memorable than Ed and Lorraine's relationship. In the latter's case, they have a business in common, own a home, and are married, all of which make it incredibly harder to get away from each other. Meanwhile, Dyer and Lieutenant Kinderman meet again annually of their own accord - both convinced that it is the other who needs them.

Although the two men are friends, there is a deeper and more loving talk between them. In a series of intimate moments - like when Lieutenant Kinderman yells at Dyer about lemon drops or when Kinderman hangs out outside the theater so he doesn't have to go home to his mother- in- law, but really just wants to have a beer with Dyer - , the duo embody the kind of squabbling and complicit silence that feels as nuanced as a decades-long marriage.

As viewers see Ed and Lorraine's engagement to each other, the audience forgets that this is the bare minimum of a marriage. What they do not see between them -but they do with the two older ones- is sacrifice and healthy conflict. Yes, Lorraine remembers her husband's pills in Conjuring 3 , but they both continue to exceed each other's comfort level.

Lorraine's blackouts / migraines and Ed's heart attack are seen as issues to overcome together in the plot, while what either of them needs is to value their partner's safety over their need to be a hero. Ed builds a cloying gazebo at the end of Conjuring 3 , but the pair never discuss how a possessed Ed nearly killed Lorraine, and the latter has all but forgotten the trauma. Their love is never put to the test with each other, making it hard to truly believe that these two have been married for decades, as viewers never see them overcome conflict or compromise.

While Ed and Lorraine never question their faith, Father Dyer and Lieutenant Kinderman invite a dialogue about God, as the latter distrusts the Catholic faith. This tug of war reports much of the elder duo's compelling conversation. In the most chilling moment of The Exorcist III , Lieutenant Kinderman describes a case in which the head of a 12-year-old boy was cut off and replaced with a statue of the head of Christ, and his body was crucified. Unlike the simplified view of the Warrens that faith cures all ills, Kinderman wants to know how a God can stand still and let men (possessed or not) commit horrors like this, while Dyer argues that there is a plan. eternal and that trusting this idea is the hardest part of faith.

Also, audiences never see the horrific deaths in The Exorcist III , leaving the mutilations to the imagination. Instead, The Conjuring 3 resorts to elaborate CGI possession scenes to prove that evil exists. In The Exorcist III, evil is personified in the air, traveling from person to person and killing randomly. If you blink, you can miss who is possessed, as there are no CGI effects that openly signal terror. When evil attacks, it subverts the images of Catholicism: killing in confessionals, destroying statues of Jesus, and draining the blood of priests.

Although The Conjuring 3 dares to include the devil in its title, the film refuses to let the devil get his due. Choosing to imbue Ed with powers similar to those of a priest, the forces of evil are easily overcome through prayer and rosaries. Unfortunately, this makes the Big Bad unexciting and daring to claim that Ed and Lorraine are more powerful than the Devil. Sacred objects, such as Bibles, are used to ward off evil, but the thriller does not dare to blaspheme. For a movie that supposedly portrays terror, it seems more concerned with glorifying Catholicism than with rooting its material in the workings of the Devil.

Overall, The Exorcist III is chilling because of how random, malevolent, and patient the Devil is. In the end, he finds a way to bond with The Exorcist in a tragic way, while letting the power of faith shine through the evil. It is not unquestionable love that saves the day, but perseverance and courage in the face of a force that only waits for Lieutenant Kinderman to yield to its disbelief. In this way, The Exorcist III manages to show religion as a source of salvation, not as a weapon.
