Can medicinal cannabis help in curing COVID-19 symptoms?
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus that affects the respiratory system.
People infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and will recover without requiring special treatment. Senior citizens and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer or those who have a weakened immune system are more susceptible to develop serious illness.
Being well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads, helps to prevent and slow down transmission. Protect yourself and others from infection by wearing a face mask, washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently and not touching your face, plus practicing social distancing and avoid going to crowded places. The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).
Currently, over 100 million people have been infected with COVID-19 worldwide and a vaccine is already in the market and some countries started vaccinating people. It is a huge topic now worldwide.
In the period of COVID-19, many of us feel a higher need for safe, natural remedies for coping with the newfound stressors of living through a pandemic. Most of us are anxious! The unpredictable nature of the pandemic’s progression, its widespread economic consequences, safety mandates, disruptions to normal living schedules, increased time spent alone, and of course, the possibility of contracting the disease itself have negatively affected mental health, with no certain ending in sight. It causes depression to many people who do not have appropriate coping mechanisms.
Researchers explain that several cannabinoids in the cannabis plant have anti-inflammatory properties. Cannabis’ active compounds have a number of properties that make it appealing as a potential treatment for infections from the novel Covid-19 virus. CBD has shown serious anti-inflammatory properties in previous studies, it doesn’t create the disorienting psychotropic effects associated with cannabis’ most common chemical THC, and it has already been approved by the FDA as safe for children with epilepsy. Recently, scientists have begun looking at its potential for reducing susceptibility to the disease, and even discussed whether it could be used as an antiviral medication.
In addition, it’s also possible that the strain could be used to prevent the virus from being able to propagate once it’s already entered someone’s system. Sativa plants strains were associated with less overall symptom relief, confirming the popular belief that Indica plant strains are generally more calming than other plant varieties.
The varying effects from different varieties of the Cannabis plant may enable patients to access more individualized medications than is typically the case for other major classes of pharmaceutical medications used to treat disorders. Right now, it’s still an assumption rather than a validated fact; however, it offers some hope for the future. If they’re able to prove the theory, the next step would be to manufacture the successful strain into medical formations that could be used for the prevention and treatment of Covid-19.
Unfortunately, you’re probably not going to be buying a random joint at your local dispensary that will prevent the virus.
