Entourage Effect: How Cannabinoids & Terpenes Work Together

Read on to learn about the particular phenomenon of the “entourage effect”.

Let's try to understand the "entourage effect" of cannabis.

Today, however, it is believed that the specific effects of cannabis, including its therapeutic properties, are not due only to a single isolated cannabinoid or to the cannabinoids generally associated with such effects.

It is in fact the combination of all the chemical components contained in cannabis that unlocks the full potential of this plant. This theory is known as the "entourage effect".

The entourage effect is the mechanism by which the substances contained in cannabis work synergistically to exert distinct effects.

Put simply, the entourage effect states that the phytocomplex of cannabis (the group of chemicals in cannabis plants) is more effective when all of its compounds act in unison than the action of just one chemical in its isolated form.

For example, let's take a look at how THC interacts with CBD. When taken on its own, THC has the ability to exert a whole range of psychoactive effects, including some side effects, including anxiety and paranoia.

CBD, on the other hand, would have the ability to mediate the "maximum level of psychoactivity" of THC, lowering it to more moderate levels and thus reducing the risk of developing anxiety disorders.

In these cases, THC and CBD work together to generate what many cannabis users believe is a more balanced effect.

The entourage effect goes far beyond the interaction between THC and CBD. Apparently, the other compounds in cannabis also play a key role in the complete profile of the effects induced by the plant.

Terpeni

In addition to cannabinoids, terpenes play the second most important role in the entourage effect.

Terpenes are aromatic compounds contained in cannabis that act as natural insect repellents and give marijuana its distinctive smell. They are also found in many other plants, flowers and fruits.

The linalool, for example, is a terpene with lavender and citrus aroma. This terpene is believed to have a calming effect and can amplify the relaxing effect of CBD.

Similarly, the α- and β-pinene terpenes the molecules that give cannabis a scent similar to that of a pine forest, also have therapeutic properties. And the list goes on ...
