Continue

Free Driving Schools - The Numbers Are Growing

I've researched various options for people who want free, or near-free, CDL training to become truck driver drivers. This is a growing list and I have the feeling that I am only scratching the surface. If you consider the dynamics in the trucking business, I think the opportunities for free training will only continue to increase for many years. Here's how I see it.
It takes just a few short weeks to learn enough about tractor trailers to allow you to obtain your class A CDL and get on the road. You'll be able to manage your logbook and drive your truck with the guidance of an experienced trainer over several weeks, preferably six. To be a good driver, takes many years . You can shift and drive in calm conditions. But I've witnessed my fully loaded rig drift sideways on a patch or ice at 50 mph and begin to jacknife. With a few subtle, gentle strategies I was capable of regaining control in less that three seconds and continuing down the road as though nothing had ever occurred. Are you going to see someone who is only two months away from graduating high school be able that? Only if that person is the luckiest on the planet! Sometimes, we all can use a little (or even a lot of) luck. You can start truck driving school in 3 weeks and you will be working for a business, making money on the highway. After about 2 months, you can be your own driver, cruising down the highway.
You may not be aware that there is a massive turnover within the trucking business. It is actually more than 100 percent. This means that a company with 1000 drivers must hire more than 1000 drivers every year to keep the majority of their trucks in motion. That's the number of people who quit each year. It's a mind-boggling experience. A truck driver's life is not easy. Because of this, and many other reasons, truck drivers are in great demand. Trucking companies often spend thousands of dollars on each driver that they hire. An orientation manager in a large company revealed to me that the average cost of each driver they hire was $3200. That includes recruitment costs, paperwork as well as transportation, orientation, initializing worker’s comp and other costs. It's an enormous expense to hire so many people every year.
When you add all these factors together, you can see why the trucking industry is the perfect candidate to receive free schooling. How can I get to that conclusion? Because a new driver could start earning enough money to cover a loan fairly quickly after he's completed the training period. The training and schooling process takes just a few weeks. Trucking companies will need drivers. However, if they have to pay a lot of money to get them, and then make them less happy, why not just spend the money on drivers you can pay per mile? This would give them a great reason for staying with the company. These are the things that companies are doing more of these days.
They offer to pay for most, if any, of the cost of school and then require that the student pay minimal or none for the schooling. This will allow them to keep the driver on the job for a longer time. They simply ask that the driver continue to work for the company for a predetermined time. If they do, they will get schooling for free or almost free because most of it will be paid by the company. In exchange, the company gets a brand new driver with a lower mileage than an existing driver. This gives the company good reason to believe the driver will stay with them for longer than if they had an experienced driver. To quit would cost the driver thousand dollars. Staying on for one year would give them valuable experience, a high-paying job and basically a ticket into trucking. Everyone wins.
