Kidney stones occur when your urine contains a high concentration of minerals and other substances, such as calcium, oxalate, and uric acid, which come together to form crystals. The crystals are glued together to form one or more stones. Stones occur when your urine does not contain enough fluid and other substances to prevent them from occurring.

A kidney stone can be as small as a grain of sand, and you can pass it without knowing it. But a bigger one can block the flow of urine and hurt a lot. Some people say the pain can be worse than that of childbirth.

The lack of water

You need to pee enough to dilute things that can turn into pebbles. If you are not drinking enough or are sweating too much, your urine may appear dark. It should be pale yellow or transparent.

The most common type of kidney stone occurs when calcium and oxalate stick together when the kidneys produce urine. Oxalate is a chemical found in many healthy foods and vegetables. Your doctor may tell you to limit foods high in oxalate if you've ever had this type of stone. Examples include:

Grits

You may have heard that drinking milk can lead to kidney stones. This is not true. Eating or drinking foods high in calcium (such as milk and cheese) and foods containing oxalate at the same time helps your body to better manage oxalate. This is because the two tend to merge in the intestine rather than the kidneys, where a stone can form.

Sodium. This is obtained mainly by table salt. This can increase your chances of having various types of kidney stones. So be careful with salty snacks, canned foods, packaged meats, and other processed foods.

Animal proteins. A type of kidney stone is formed when urine is too acidic. Red meat and seafood can increase uric acid in your body. It can build up in the joints and cause gout or go to the kidneys and produce a stone. Most importantly, animal protein increases the level of calcium in the urine and reduces the amount of citrate, both of which promote stone formation.
