It relaxes you and gets you back in shape: a yoga class can help new mothers to live motherhood more peacefully and to fight anxiety. A master of this oriental discipline explains the secrets of breathing.

Yoga might be for you. Through simple breathing exercises, meditation, and stretching you will be able to regain control of yourself.

To understand the benefits of this oriental discipline on new mothers, we interviewed Maurizio di Massimo, a professional Yoga teacher for over 25 years and collaborator of the Institute of Natural Medicine of Urbino for the Yoga, Ayurveda, and vibrational therapies sector.

How effective can yoga practice be in ailments such as postpartumdepression? After giving birth, the woman feels fragmented and tends to lose the balance between interiority and exteriority. The apparently static yoga positions allow you to stimulate the joints, muscles, lymphatic and circulatory systems. A good starting point for the new mother to regain possession of her corporeality. Furthermore, breathing is fundamental and must be performed slowly and only through the nose, acting on the emotional states.

What are the most suitable exercises? It is essential to acquire prânâyâma breathing techniques, a method that harmonizes the breath with the mind and the senses. Through this practice, the body becomes strong and healthy. The apexes of the lungs receive an adequate supply of oxygen, resulting in an improvement in the quantity and quality of blood in the body. It is inevitable that the psyche also benefits from it.
How often should the exercises be practiced? It is important for the new mother to carve out a space for herself. Even 30 minutes a day is enough.

What do you recommend to a mother who is alone in a panic or anxiety crisis? Act immediately on the breathing and focus on the diaphragm. Slowing your breath is essential because it allows you to regain possession of the surrounding reality and to focus on the "here and now".
