What Steps Are Involved in A Kitchen Remodel?

If you’re contemplating having your kitchen remodeled but aren’t quite sure whether it’s the right time, or even the right type of project for you to undertake, this short guide to the steps involved in an average kitchen remodel, should give you a clearer idea:

What does a kitchen remodel entail?

Generally – although the term is sometimes used interchangeably with renovating – remodeling a kitchen involves reconstructing (or in some cases, constructing from scratch) the existing kitchen space to make it more functional, stylish and modern.

How long does the average kitchen remodel take?

Below, you’ll find a very brief outline of the many steps involved in a professional kitchen remodel:

Locating a contractor or home renovation firm

This step can take hours, days or weeks depending on how wide you extend your search, and how successful you are at finding a company you want to work with.

Designing the project

Once you find a contractor to work with, they will help you design the project taking all of your needs into account. While it can take much longer if both parties can’t agree on the final design, it typically takes just a few days.

Waiting for the products

Depending on where your items are being shipped from, this step can take anything from a month, to several weeks.

Demolition

How long the demolition process takes is generally guided by the extent of the work being carried out, and how delicate it is for the contractors to perform. Some minor demolition work may take as little as a day, while larger scale projects can take several days.

Changing the utility infrastructure

In a lot of home renovation projects, the layout of the utilities may need to be changed in order to meet the homeowners’ requirements, and while the work involved may not take that long, it’s often necessary to hire multiple contractors, and wait while each one completes their work. The best way of shortening this step, is to hire a home renovation company, who will have their own team of contractors to carry out all of the necessary work.

Painting and decorating

Painting and decorating is often done before the kitchen cabinets are installed, and often takes just a day or two, but if painting is required after the cabinets have been put in place, this could extend the work by a couple of days.

Flooring

Typically, reflooring a kitchen can take up to a couple of days to complete, depending on the size of the floor, the material chosen and the complexity of the work.

Cabinets

Once the cabinets have arrived and are ready to be installed, the process should only take a couple of days.

Countertops and sinks

Again, if the countertops and sink are ready to be installed, the work shouldn’t take more than a day.

Appliances

Once you’ve selected your new appliances and they’re ready to be installed, putting them safely in place shouldn’t take too long – generally a day or two - provided you don’t encounter any unexpected problems.

Lighting

While this step should only take an experienced contractor as little as a day to complete, more complex lighting systems could take a little longer.

In some instances, a large kitchen remodel that involves extensive structural changes and the like, can take a number of months to complete, and is usually highly dependent upon the waiting times for products, and whether the project encounters any serious problems. For smaller remodelling projects, you can expect to have a resplendent new kitchen in as little as a month!
