Understanding Sexual Interference and the Dangers It Poses

Why is it Important for Organizations to be Aware of the Dangers of Sexual Interference?

Sexual harassment is one of the most prevalent forms of discrimination in the workplace. It can also be considered a form of sexual interference. Sexual harassment is any unwanted sexual advance, verbal or physical conduct that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment. Sexual interference is when someone in a position of power uses their authority to exploit someone who is subordinate in order to obtain something from them (i.e., sex).

The consequences for organizations that are not aware of the dangers of sexual interference are severe. Organizations that do not take steps to prevent and respond to sexual harassment and/or interference may be liable if someone sues the company for creating an unsafe work environment.

How Can You Prevent Sexual Harassment in Organizations or Projects?

Sexual harassment is a form of discrimination that violates the dignity of the person and creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading or offensive environment. Sexual harassment can take many forms, including verbal abuse, physical contact and advances, suggestive remarks about a person’s body or sexual behavior, displaying sexually explicit pictures or materials in the workplace without consent.

The first step to prevent sexual harassment is to make sure that you have an anti-sexual harassment policy in place. The policy should be communicated to all employees and supervisors at all levels in your organization. You need to make sure that your employees are aware of what constitutes sexual harassment and how they can report it if they experience it.
