Daily Stress Management Techniques to Get You Through the Day

Don’t let stress derail your workday—use these stress management techniques to get you through the day. Stress at work can be inevitable, but with the right tools, you can reduce it to manageable levels and be more productive in the process. Consider these daily stress management techniques, whether it’s delegating a project to another consultant or tracking the time you spend on each project to better budget your time and stay on track with deadlines.

1) Breathe
When you’re stressed at work, it’s natural to let things bubble up inside until they explode. But if you can learn to regulate your breathing—taking deep breaths or breathing out slowly—you can slow down your heart rate and diffuse some of that stress. This can help you think more clearly and focus on work-related tasks. (Related: How Breathing Exercises Can Help You Manage Stress)

2) Exercise
Exercise releases hormones that can help you combat stress, so it’s easy to see why people consider it a stress management technique. During your break time (if you have one), get out of your seat and take a quick walk around the block or try some other form of physical activity. After all, who says stress management can’t be fun?

3) Write it down
Whether you’re an entrepreneur, freelancer, or employee, it’s crucial that you document your time in order to maintain an accurate budget for projects. There are several Project Budgeting Software systems on the market that can help you organize your workload and get a clear picture of how much time different tasks require. Alternatively, some project managers prefer using old-fashioned pen and paper when it comes to keeping track of projects—these strategies could help keep your stress levels low while facilitating your project management

4) Have a meeting
If you’re running a one-person show, meetings are essential. It might seem like overkill, but a daily morning meeting helps ensure that everyone on your team is ready for whatever challenges come their way. Keeping your team focused and productive also means making sure that everyone knows what they need to do every day—so project budgeting software can help you map out tasks for your consultants and make sure nothing falls through the cracks.

5) Meditation
Meditation is one of my favorite daily stress management techniques. Meditation has been shown to increase focus, clarity, and creativity—all things you need a lot of when working on a big project! Download an app like Headspace or Omvana for guided meditation tutorials. If you’re just starting out with meditation, it can take some time for your brain and body to get into a relaxed state, so try practicing in short increments and making it part of your routine until it becomes automatic.

6) Re-arrange your office space
For example, many companies allow employees to place their personal items on their desk for a sense of ownership and pride. However, studies have shown that clutter can actually raise stress levels in a work environment. In order to create an organized and stress-free work environment, re-arrange your office space so you don’t get overwhelmed by all that clutter. Project Budgeting Software helps keep projects on track by tracking time spent working each day or week.

7) Learn a new skill
Stress management techniques can be broken down into three broad categories: Cognitive techniques like mindfulness training, behavioral techniques like exercise and deep breathing, and alternative therapy treatments such as yoga or acupuncture. Deep breathing is simple and effective; one study found that it effectively lowered stress levels while boosting positive emotions. By simply focusing on your breath as you inhale and exhale, you can shift your focus away from what’s stressing you out (thus reducing your stress level) while feeling happier.

Conclusion
One of the best stress management techniques that we can use is recognizing our individual triggers and then working hard to avoid them. By learning about your own specific stress points, you’ll be able to remove unnecessary sources of frustration from your day and keep yourself from getting worked up over things you have no control over. Additionally, keeping a time tracker for your consultant work is important, as it allows you to track how long each task takes so that you can stay on top of your workload and find ways to streamline it.
