What to Consider when Choosing Fins for your SUP Board

Choosing a fin for your stand up paddle board is one of the toughest decisions you will ever make in the world of water sporting.

Have you ever tried surfing without fins on your surf board? If you have, then am sure you know how challenging it is to control the board on the raging waves. Fins make surfing easier and a lot more fun especially if you have the right fins for your surf board.

With the different sizes, shapes and materials that these surf boards come in, choosing the right fins will not be a walk in the park. This post therefore focuses on the major points to consider when choosing fins for your sup boards.

The fin setup – as we all know, surfboards come in different shapes and sizes and this determines their fin setups. Take time to inspect your surfboard. Turn it upside down and confirm the number of fin boxes available. For most surfboards fin boxes will range from one to five fins.

The fin design – different fin designs have different interaction in water. Technically, some of the fin designs are important than other but this will solely depend on the intended use of the paddle boards. The thruster fin is the most sought after fin in the world of surfing. The fin is placed at the back of the tail for enhanced stability and maneuverability. However, there is more to it that just a thruster fin. A quad fin set offers more speed and performance on both small and giant waves.

The fin size – the fin size is an important factor to consider. The surface area needs to be right for the surfboard size and for your weight as well. That said, most surfers recommend going one inch for every foot of the board length. For example, if you have a 9 foot long surf board, a 9 inch fin would be great for your surfing adventure. However, where you are not sure of the right fin size, consult a professional.

The fin base – the base of the fin is where the base of the fin and the board meet. The length of that base affects the way the board will turn in the water. The larger the fin base the easier it will be to turn in the water and catch the waves. This is a useful characteristic for expert surfers whose drive and passion is determined by how fast they can go.

The fin rake – the fin rake, popularly known as sweep should be similar to the fin shape you opt for. The fin rake makes it easy for the fins to curve and arc under water. In fact, the more rake a fin has the easier it gets to surf where there are giant water waves. On the other hand, where the fin has less rake, maneuverability will be a challenge.

To sum it all up, a god surf time will depend on your choice of surfboard and fins. Make the right choice.
