WD's My Passport 5TB USB hard drive review

WD’s My Passport external 2.5-inch USB 3.0 hard drive is now available in up to 5TB in capacity, which means you can stuff even more data in your pocket than with the last iteration. At $150 retail, you pay $30 more than the previous top-capacity 4TB unit, but that’s the same price as its Seagate Expansion rival, as well as one-fifth the price per gigabyte of SSDs.

Design and specs

The 5TB My Passport measures 4.22 x 2.95 x 0.75 inches and weighs 0.46 pounds. It’s also available…

Dell's XPS 15 7590 Review

Dell’s XPS 15 (version 7590) is a test of just how much hardware you can jam into a 4.2-pound laptop. This latest iteration includes up to an 8-core “overclockable” Core i9-9980HK and a discrete GeForce GTX 1650 card. That is a lot of hot hardware in a body arguably not built to handle it. Hardware you'd expect to see in a gaming laptop, not a high-end, thin-and-light workhorse.

We know why Dell likely did it: to compete with another high-end 15-inch laptop that's stuffed to the…

Acer Nitro 5 (17-inch, AN517-51-56YW) review

In the field of low-end gaming laptops, Acer’s latest Nitro 5 (model AN517-51-56YW) is about as budget as they come. But for $880, you don’t need more than what the Acer Nitro 5 offers to play Fortnite and Apex Legends at 1080p and 60 frames per second with maximum settings. You can cross the same frame rate and resolution hurdles in lots of other modern games with a few minor graphical tweaks.

Design and display

Considering the hexagonal frame, the shiny red display hinge, the…

Spectacular laptop deals

It’s laptop day in the world of tech deals. We’ve spotted several pretty good deals on clamshells, but our favorite is at Walmart. The big box retailer is selling an Acer Aspire 5 15.6-inch laptop for $400.

This PC is rocking a quad-core, 1.6GHz Intel “Kaby Lake R” Core i5-8250U, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a 15.6-inch 1080p display. There’s one type-C port, two USB 3.0 ports, and a USB 2.0 port. There’s also HDMI out if you want to hook this up to an external display.

Finding…

The 'radically different' Essential Phone 2

It’s been more than two years, several price cuts, and one mass layoff since Andy Rubin’s Essential burst into the scene with a new kind of phone. Hailed by critics and instantly declared the next big thing, it was the first Android phone with a notch, no headphone jack, a modular magnetic system, and an overinflated sense of purpose.

In no uncertain terms, Essential Phone was a beautiful disaster. Initial figures put sales south of 100,000, the promised charging and audio mods…

This GeForce-powered Asus gaming laptop

We loved Acer’s new GeForce GTX 1650-equipped 15-inch Nitro 5 gaming laptop, especially at its juicy $780 price point. That’s pretty cheap, but today’s deal goes even lower. Best Buy is selling a 17-inch Asus Tuf FX70DT gaming laptop for $650 loaded with very similar specs and some minor trade-offs. This Asus laptop itself usually sells for $1,000, but you need to be logged into a My Best Buy Member account to see the discount.

So what do you get for that price? A four core, eight…

Soliom G1 380° review

I didn’t quite know what to make of Soliom’s G1 380° ($100 on Amazon) the first time I saw the horizontally split-frame front/rear, surround video that it captures by default. It’s unique among dash cams in my experience, and while the quality is weak, this camera is arguably the best I’ve seen for pure legal daytime protection to the front and sides. For everything else, not so much.

Split-frame video

The Soliom uses two extremely wide field-of-view, 190-degree cameras. By…

AMD’s 8-core Ryzen 7 2700X drops

AMD’s awesome Ryzen 3000 processors are here and kicking all sorts of butt, so now retailers are looking to unload older but still-solid Ryzen 2000-series CPUs at jaw-dropping prices. Amazon is currently selling the Ryzen 7 2700X for just $195. The price has been circling close to that for a few days now, but as recently as mid-September this processor was selling for $240, and AMD’s 2nd-gen Ryzen flagship launched at $330 just a year ago.

On top of the great price, this CPU also…
