A Fairhope man was charged last week with interfering with a 911 dispatch call, and new court documents show a similar thing happened at the same apartment building a month earlier.

The residents of the apartment were the first to know and called the police.

On June 6, Trenton Lisak, 31, allegedly interfered with 911 dispatch calls from the Mobile Police Department, Fire Rescue, the sheriff and even the Metropolitan Jail in the downtown entertainment district. Police say Lissak…

4 Reasons to Choose an Unarmed Guard Over an Armed One

While you might assume that because armed guards carry weapons, this automatically makes them more effective in their role, this isn’t necessarily the case. More often than you may think, unarmed guards prove to be an economical alternative to armed guards, and deliver the same protection for property and individuals.

Below are 4 good reasons to choose an unarmed guard over an armed one:

1. The security threat you face, is a low one

If the business you’re seeking to protect, or circumstance in which you’re seeking protection, isn’t likely to attract threats such as armed robbery or violent conflict, then it doesn’t really make sense to hire an armed guard; this will likely be more security than you need, and may be able to afford.

Here are a number of circumstances that typically present a low level security threat:

- Traffic control

- General surveillance

- Corporate security

- Entry access

- Retail loss prevention

2. Your budget is minimal

If you don’t have a huge budget to spend on security, but you need some level of protection, then an armed guard will probably fit the bill. Going through the same rigorous training and licensing requirements as armed guards, unarmed guards perform just as well in most security settings, and can help you improve security in low-risk situations without the added cost and complications of armed guards.

3. Liability is a concern

With guns and the use of lethal force coming into play when you hire armed guards, if you or your company are not ready and willing to deal with the fallout that can often arise in the aftermath of an incident where guns and lethal force were used, it’s best to play it safe and hire unarmed guards.

With the hiring of armed guards, comes the responsibility associated with someone getting injured or being killed at the site, and should an event like this happen, you would be held liable for the victim’s injury or death, along with legal fees and settlements, which could cost you dearly.

4. The environment you’re seeking to protect is gun-sensitive

If you’re seeking to hire protection for an establishment such as a school, hospital, library or corporate workplace, the mere sight of guards carrying weapons could prove unsettling, especially in light of the growing number of incidents involving the discharging of weapons in public spaces, and U.S. tensions over gun laws.

In places such as those mentioned above, you can get an equally effective level of protection from unarmed guards, and prevent those being protected, from feeling unnecessarily uncomfortable or scared.

There is absolutely a time and a place for unarmed guards, and if you can tick some or all of the boxes above, then they’re probably your best security option under the circumstances.
