I really liked this game. It's an enjoyable story with good characters and varied routes that cater to different relationship fantasies. Realistic for the time period but still manages happy endings. Really hot sex scenes. I'm now looking forward to whatever else Ertal Games puts out! Rick is bae.. Finished my first play through (and as always got a bad ending lol darn my luck) and just thought I'd come and give it a thumbs up. I found the story interesting, the characters very believable. As some have mentioned the backgrounds need some work. Im not artist myself, but since this is a VN format, they really should do something to clean up some of the images. Honestly the story is good enough it doesnt need outstanding art to make this a good read. Just you know clean up the images (back grounds) a bit so they dont actually hurt the eyes when you look at them. Other than that i have no complaints and truely enjoyed it.. I enjoyed "A Hand in the Darkness." Though I felt the game was a little short, I quite liked the writing and had no trouble staying engaged the whole time, including through all the optional paths. Each companion played out differently and felt unique (there wasn't much recycling going on), and I thought the steamy scenes were very well written--my only complaint being over-use of the word "slither" (this was not a tentacle thing), a word choice that would bump me out of the moment for a second. Besides the slithering, I thought the flashpoints were a breathless read, and rather than peek through my fingers (we fans have all been there) I had both eyes open. Well done. As for the art, I didn't particularly like or dislike the character art; it worked for me and supported the story. The backgrounds were better than fine - I liked them. I do think a couple more character sprites would have been nice, but really the developers worked well with what they had (same goes for music). Overall, a good way to support BL games and I enjoyed my time with it. Thanks for doing it for BL fans, guys, and thanks especially for the quality writing.. This is a fun - and pretty hot - m/m romance game with an engaging murder mystery side plot. There are 9 different endings and even the bad ones are entertaining. My one complaint is that the text could have used a bit more editing. There are a fair number of typos. Be warned if that is a big sticking point for you.. OK so not my usual fare, and in fact the first VN I have actually played through. This game is NOT perfect, a few glaring translation errors (too much fisting of hands), some occassionally inconsistency with foreground and background art, inconsistent music and SFX and some frankly daft plot points does not stop this from being actually quite a charming game. I have to admit I was pleased to see a BL VN pop up and I have noticed a few more around steam now and whilst we may not be getting Dramatical Muirder in a legit form any time soon I think it's games like this with the right kind of heart, telling this kind of story which will help us on our way. Those naughty bits are very naughty by the way - plus yay for getting the ending I was aiming for on my first try!! I may not have played any VNs before but I have watched dodger play a few. Very tempted to LP this . there's only one English LP I can find. Short update. Have now completed all endings and still have the same opinions as I put above. Some of the endings are genuinely a bit emotional if you're feeling a bit soppy and my almost spot on 7 hours feels like a good indicator of some sped up sections too (maybe half and half on play throughs I sped up and those I didn't). The naughty bits are going to make an LP unlikely but also make the game more worth the playtime! I'd suggest waiting for a sale to pick it up but then would recommend.. Played 2 different paths and I noticed some problems. Ambiances are rare. Sometimes there is some interesting scenes without sound/music. And sometimes the music is inappropriate. (Or it's me that just don't feel the song, probably) Illustrations are made by different artists, it don't let the universe have a visual identity, the style change too fast sometimes. Same for characters, sometime their hair color suddenly change with no reason. And imo, they need more mood/emotionnal state illustrations too. Sad that we don't have a bonus feature somewhere. (Like album, or little adventure, ect) I learned by the credits that this game was funded by a crowdfunding, so I don't want to be mean with it. At this time I have many paths left to discover; I had fun to play. Story isn't so bad and characters sympathetic, when they want, hah.. I love this game. Good story, sympathic-looking characters (even Damian, yes), and excellent music. I LOVE the music. While playing, I was sometimes tempted to stand up and dance because of some of the tracks! I really hope that Ertal Games can make a DLC with all of the musics of the game. I noticed something confusing though: the illustrations aren't made by the same person. Sometimes, I had difficulties to recognize Alex White in the illustrations, even if they were really well-made. In some illustrations, he is blond, in some has brown hair. Overall, this is a really good game. I do not regret buying it.. I just loved this game so very much. the characters were charming. Each storyline took such a unique turn. The writing was excellent: romantic and engaging. Really, this is one of my favourite gay visual novels I've played in a long time. I can't recommend it highly enough.. Writing after completing Damian's route, and will update later if my opinion changes. (Edited after completing Rick and Monty's routes.) Bought this game at 50% off during the Steam Winter Sale 2018. In a VN like this, I expect to have my adjustable auto/skip options, scrolling to move backwards and reread content, and branching stories without too much overlapping content. On the technical front, this VN meets my expectations for a game of its full price, and exceeds that of quite a few games that I've played at the same, or even higher. Writing quality is consistent and the minor errors in grammar won't jump out at you unless you're actively looking for them. (In Monty's route I noticed more than in the others, I was likely looking for them.) As other reviewers have mentioned, there are some common (but harmful) BL/yaoi tropes that appear in this game. That does not mean the writing is bad. I want to give huge credit to the writers. I like that the game is about exploring sexuality, but it's not the only thing the story has to offer. Overall I'm okay with that. It's kind of a thing in BL/yaoi stories. As much as I would've liked to make a couple more decisions in Damian's route or had the opportunity to let Alex reject him more, the heat-of-the-moment actions do build into a genuine relationship if you stand up for Alex . In Damian's route, he behaves like a prick from start to the 2/3 point. Alex is consciously aware of Damian's terrible attitude and shady behaviors. If Alex plays along with Damian's sexcapades and never rejects him or asserts himself as an individual, Damian never learns. He doesn't realize that he appreciates Alex for more than his body. He doesn't pull himself together to behave. Alex is left dejected and going home to a disappointed family. To achieve Damian's Good End, Alex has to show agency. He has to refuse doing the things that make him uncomfortable, but he also has to be compassionate. And I liked that message a lot. This ended up being my favorite route. I also want to give a nod to the feelings that Alex expresses during Rick and Monty's routes. In both, Alex verbalizes his discomfort with the predicaments they are in. Alex calls Monty out for being possessive, and shares his insecurities about Rick's engagement. The fact that good endings are achieved by calling out the guys on their BS makes me happy. Alex is a lovable MC at a weird time in his development that gets tossed into a new environment. He's fun to follow, and I enjoyed how distinct his personality remained throughout the story. It was nice. I liked him a lot more than the MCs of other VNs I've played. He has agency and attitude. His actions have consequences. These are things that I can't praise enough that get brushed off way too often. Finally, here's my shortlist of gripes because I'm a spoiled long-term veteran to the genre. I would've been thrilled by having a couple more variations of the CGs and sprite/expression sheets. I love expressions as much as I do CGs. But as-is, I have no issue with the amount or the quality of CGs this game offers. Sprite placement bottom-left inconsistent. Not a huge problem. My precious achievements that I care about way less than literally anything else Young characters + dangerous tropes = people that aren't me are going to complain, but I'd like to see the exploration of those arcs more which leads into the next couple things. Want more exploration into not only Alex's growth as a person, but in that of his friends during each route. I would've loved to see more of them all as individuals and then see their roles in the friend group touched upon. Want more 1910. There was an opportunity to build a little more of the setting. We got it with Alex's fear of being caught committing indecent actions, but I want more of this in the future. Want a more tactful approach to the twists. Dropping more hints throughout the story, even subtle ones, can be an effective way of not making the reader feel overwhelmed. Damian's Good End had me like wat.
