A Handy Guide on The Working of Automobile Air Intake Systems

What moves your wheels? Is it your engine? No, it’s the process of burning that occurs inside your engine burning chamber. The engine has different chambers in which the process of burning occurs. The main component which facilitates the process of burning is the air intake system of your car. If this system is not working, your engine's efficiency gets lowered plus it will also affect your fuel average.

There could be many other parts that directly affect an engine's performance like exhaust systems. You may say that the exhaust system works as the lungs of the engine and the air intake system is like the respiratory system of your car, which brings the essential oxygen into your body.

Internal Mechanism of Air Intake System:
Ingredients that are required to make an explosion inside the engine to create energy which is then used to drive your wheels. Spark, gas or fuel, and oxygen are the main ingredients that are used to facilitate the process of burning. Oxygen is present at 21% in our atmosphere but nitrogen is present at 78% in our atmosphere.

This air intake system is like an air pump. That is used to carve out necessary oxygen from the air. We need to initiate a chain reaction and for this, we need a continuous inflow of oxygen within the burning chamber of our engine. That continuous inflow is the sole responsibility of an air intake system. This is the main job of an air intake system. Now we will move towards the science of an air intake system.

Science Behind its working:
In a layman's language, an air intake system brings air from the atmosphere into your engine manifold. Then in the engine manifold, it gets mixed with your fuel gas. Then the spark ignites and provides the basic level ignition to the mixture of fuel and air. And, this energy as a result of the ignition or explosion then goes through the cylinders of your car’s engine. That transmits energy through the engine cylinders and is responsible for giving the required thrust of kinetic energy to the wheels of your car.

Without a continuous supply of air intake system, the engine of a car would not be able to perform. And, as a result, your car’s thrust to its wheels becomes sporadic. Overall performance of your car becomes plummeted and you may feel instant vibrations while driving on a smooth road. When you press the gas pedal you may feel that your car is not able to get the required power.

Now, we will talk about the main components of an air intake system. This system comprises air filters, air inflow sensors, oxygen sensors, and a throttle body. We will talk about these components one by one.

Air Filter:
You must have heard about this main component. And, many times we do not give due importance to this vital organ of a car’s air intake system. It is mostly found in the front assembly of a car's physical structure. It consists of plastic, aluminum, or metallic retainer boxes that have dedicated air filtration sheets. These sheets are porous from which air can easily permeate to the intake manifold.

This system of air filtration helps to filter out the air and to confine oxygen density particles in its intake manifold. This system helps to get pure air excluding the contamination which can cause clogging in your air intake system. The air which has a purer oxygen level is very helpful to get good performance of your air intake system.

In order to check, whether it is working well or not. You just unscrew the retainer box and drive out the air filtration sheet. Throw a beam of white light on it if you think that 50% of the light isn’t able to pass through that filtration sheet then just order an air filter online and replace it.

Air Flow Sensor:
The air intake system requires the correct amount of air in order to mix with the fuel of your car. The air inflow sensor is responsible to get the required influx of air into the combustion chamber of the engine. Modern automotive engines have two types of sensors: hotwire system and van meters.

Vane meters are usually flaps made of aluminum or any other light material. When the influx of air comes these flaps move and from their movements, a meter is able to record how much air is flowing.

A hot wire system is a bunch of wires. These wires' electrical resistance increases when the temperature rises. The output current is used to measure the air inflow.

Throttle Body:
Lastly, the air coming from the air inflow sensors gets hit on the throttle body connected to a shaft. As you release the pressure from the gas pedal the valve of the throttle body opens and carves out the required influx from the air inflow sensor.

If your air intake system is not working properly then in simple words, you won’t be able to produce the required amount of thrust for your wheels. If you think that your car has a poor fuel average and you are not getting the required thrust then we would recommend you to search air intake installation near me on the search bar and you will get the most famous air intake installation near me. You just have to go for the most professional and the one that is nearer to your destination.
