cnc machining services parts has been installed on the first Raptocut milling machine in North America by Merrill Technologies Group in Saginaw, Michigan, a contract manufacturer for the aerospace and defense industries as well as energy, automation, transportation, and heavy equipment. The machine was installed in partnership with FPT Industrie and Fadal Engineering.

The Raptocut is manufactured by FPT, a CNC and milling machine manufacturer based in Italy. Fadal Engineering, based in Troy, is the North American importer of FPT products for companies such as Merrill and other similar organizations.

Specifically in the aerospace machining and engineering space, the travelling-column milling machine adds additional cnc machining parts capabilities in high-volume, high-speed aluminum plate machining, which will help to meet the growing production requirements of those fields as they grow in size. The Raptocut has a spindle speed of 30,000 rotations per minute and a horsepower of 140, allowing it to cut metal at a high rate and at a high speed.

It has a machining envelope — the area within which a piece of material can be effectively cut — of 280 inches by 100 inches by 40 inches, and it can cut aluminum alloy parts at a rate of 2,000 inches per minute. The Automatic Pallet System eliminates the need for downtime by allowing for the staging and setup of the next part without interfering with the cnc machining services process in progress.

This is an extremely unique machine, according to Ezhil Viswanathan, vice president of sales at FPT North America. "Four international patents are currently pending on this machine," he adds."When it comes to critical aerospace and defense products that require multi-axis machining with high tolerance complex geometry, the Raptocut is truly game changing.

Before purchasing the Raptocut, Merrill made an investment in FPT tools. Incorporated into the Dinomax is a 20-inch by 10-inch vertical gantry machine that can handle heavy-duty machining in addition to high-speed cutting. It has automatic head changing capabilities, which allows Merrill to machine a wide range of materials with a single machine.

Manufacturing operations at Merrill are concentrated on design, fabrication, machining, and integration. The company's manufacturing floor space totals nearly 700,000 square feet. It has a workforce of more than 350 people.
