Advanced Wound Care Market Drivers, Opportunities, Challenges and Key Players Analysis

With the increasing prevalence of road accidents, the demand for advanced wound care products is rising sharply. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), road accidents claim the lives of around 1.3 million people every year. The organization also found that around 20 to 50 million people across the world are diagnosed with non-fatal injuries because of road accidents every year. As advanced wound care products exhibit a higher absorption capacity than the conventional wound care products, such as sponge, gauze, wadding, and plaster, they are being increasingly used for preventing wound seepage.

Additionally, these products enable oxygen exchange and block the entry of various microbes into the wounds, assist in the formation of new tissues, which cover the wound, and retain moisture, which further boost their popularity among patients.

As geriatric people are highly vulnerable to various injuries and often suffer from chronic wounds, their surging population is fueling the sales of advanced wound care products. As per the World Population Ageing 2020 report published by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), the population of people aged 65 years or above will rise from 727 million in 2020 to more than 1.5 billion by 2050. Active wound care products, wound therapy devices, and advanced wound dressing products are the most widely used types of advanced wound care products.

Amongst these, the demand for advanced wound dressings was found to be the highest during the last few years. The major application areas of these products are burns, surgical and chronic wounds, and ulcers. Out of these, the use of these products was observed to be the highest for treating surgical and chronic wounds in 2015, and this trend is predicted to rise rapidly in the coming years. This is credited to the increasing geriatric population and the rising prevalence of obesity and diabetes across the world.

Globally, the sales of advanced wound care products were the highest in North America in the years gone by and the situation will not change in the coming years. This is attributed to the mushrooming population of older people, rising cases of diabetes and obesity, and increasing prevalence of road accidents in the region. However, the advanced wound care market is expected to register the highest CAGR in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region over the next few years.
