History
There are no written accounts of history in Ladakh, the region of Jammu and Kashmir that borders Nepal, Pakistan and India. By the 13th century, Ladakh's nomadic Buddhist populations were entirely Hindu, but they converted to Buddhism in the 17th century under the influence of Sengge Namgyal, the king of Tibet.
Unfortunately, most modern-day Ladakhi’s are not even aware of their roots. As is the case with the Kashmiris, many Ladakhi’s carry no identification documents. Even in Ladakh's major cities, birth certificates are difficult to obtain and far from common. According to local legend, the locals descended from the son of a Buddha, who visited the region to spread Buddhism.
Ladakh has a population of about half a million people.
How to Reach Ladakh
Ladakh is accessible from Srinagar and Delhi. You can fly to Leh (last stop), then bus it to Leh. But if you are taking the road, you can start your journey from Srinagar or Manali. It is a popular destination and you should book an appropriate tour at least two months prior to your trip to the Himalayan state of Ladakh or book a Ladakh package for yourself.
You can drive there from Jammu in a basic jeep, and you can fly from Delhi to Leh in a small plane, or you can drive from Manali to Leh. There is one famous highway that goes to Ladakh and that is the Manali Leh highway. You can also take an airplane from Delhi to Leh. If you decide to go with a tour company you can book a car through their services.
In Ladakh you can visit temples, monasteries, and Tibetan monasteries. It is advisable to take a Jeep or a 4x4 car to explore Ladakh as these cars support the terrain.

Best Time to Visit Ladakh
The best time to visit Ladakh is between mid- May till early October. If you can go during this season, you can visit Ladakh in an un-interrupted way. Later in the winters, the roads to Ladakh gets closed due to heavy snowfall witnessed in the high altitude passes.
