Break-in suspects using cell-jamming technology to avoid surveillance cameras

CMPD has reported that burglars have managed to bypass surveillance cameras during certain residential break-ins by utilizing advanced technology, as stated by WBTV.

Cell-jamming occurs when an individual utilizes a device to disrupt radio or wireless signals.

The Federal Communications Commission has stated that intentionally using a phone jammer, GPS blockers, or any other signal jamming device to interfere with authorized radio communications is considered a violation of federal law. It is important to note that there are no exceptions for using such devices within a business, classroom, residence, or vehicle.

Cell-jamming may occur from a device located approximately 30 feet away from the desired target, or household cameras.

A suspect was caught on video sneaking through a yard during the night in a south Charlotte community. However, it is important to note that not all incidents have been recorded on camera.

John Shocknesse, VP of Customer Operations for CPI Security, emphasized the importance of being vigilant when it comes to wireless devices and potential interference.

In an instant, an individual may appear on camera, yet with cell-jamming, a simple flick of a switch or press of a button is all it takes for that person to vanish, leaving no trace behind.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has reported instances of this problem occurring during residential burglaries in certain areas of south Charlotte.

Shocknesse mentioned that they have not observed any of that activity, therefore, they are conscious of it and are ensuring they possess the most advanced and up-to-date technology.

WBTV inquired about the types of devices that are particularly vulnerable to cell-jamming.

Shocknesse stated that the point at which it becomes relevant is with certain outdated wireless devices lacking encryption.

He mentioned that the latest security and surveillance systems feature advanced technology with encryption, ensuring enhanced security.

Shocknesse emphasized the significance of having cameras and onboard recording devices, stating that even in the event of an issue, the recorded footage can be brought to the police department for investigation.

In addition to the aforementioned guidance, he emphasized that the most effective measures to avoid cell-jamming involve utilizing modern technology equipped with encryption and opting for a wired connection over Wi-Fi.

Implementing strategies such as ensuring adequate lighting, activating alarm systems, and keeping bushes trimmed below three feet can help deter home burglaries.
