Paintwork is formed as a result of film formation ( drying, curing) of paint and varnish materials applied to the surface. The main purpose of paintwork is to protect materials from destruction and decorative surface finish.

Paints and varnishes are classified according to 3 main characteristics:

- coating material;

- surface appearance ( coating class) - characterized by color, texture guts.pk/shop/product/giotto-turbo-giant-pastel-marker-pack-of-12/, quality of the coating, presence or absence of defects.

- operating conditions ( coverage group).

In accordance with GOST 9.032-74, coatings are divided into 7 classes in terms of quality.

Class 1 includes smooth monochromatic coatings: high-gloss, glossy and matte
The highest requirements for the appearance of the surface are in the 1st class. In this case, surface defects visible to the naked eye are not allowed.

For class 2, coatings of all textures with varying degrees of gloss are applied
On class 2 coatings, slight shagreening is allowed, as well as individual strokes and risks

High gloss coatings are not recommended for grades 3-4

On class 3 coatings, slight shagreening, individual strokes and risks, waviness of no more than 1.5 mm are allowed.

On class 4 coatings, shagreen without size restrictions, individual strokes and notches from faber guts.pk/shop/category/brands/faber-castell/, waviness of no more than 2 mm are allowed.

For grades 5-7, in addition to high-gloss, smooth monochromatic glossy is also not recommended, since it is economically inexpedient to use highly decorative coatings for lower and low grades, at the same time, defects are more noticeable on such coatings.

On class 5 coatings, shagreen, individual streaks, strokes, marks, waviness of no more than 2.5 mm are allowed

On class 6 coatings, shagreen, individual streaks, strokes, marks, waviness of no more than 2.5 mm, different shades, non-uniformity of the pattern are allowed

On class 7 coatings, defects are not standardized.

For all classes of coatings, defects that affect the protective properties of coatings ( pores, craters, wrinkling, etc.) are not allowed .

The appearance of coatings depends both on the properties of paintwork materials and on the technology of their production. To obtain the different grades of coatings, appropriate surface preparation and drying conditions must be in place. The maximum achievable class of coatings for enamels and varnishes depends on the texture of their films.
