Obviously, I find myself somewhat horrified to understand that I'm now teaching university-age students who were four or five years old when World of Warcraft first came out; the match I joined during that wow classic gold long-ago summer is now a nostalgia object with a market.
The innocence of those days is a commodity on the market. One of my fondest gaming memories ever was the feeling that gripped me when I jumped a Hippogryph out of Rutheran Village into Auberdine; my very first flight in a match that appeared more boundless than anything else I'd ever played--even my cherished Morrowind. Those were the times when my gambling experiences were sprinkled with a layer of dust that was faerie I took for granted.
This leads me to the inevitable wet blanket of a thesis: I fear that World of Warcraft: Classic is unsustainable, and will prove to be incapable of sustaining a purposeful community of anyone other than those dedicated to burning through the endgame. After triumphing over the challenge in this universe that is deliberately restricted and they will fade away.
World of Warcraft: Classic, by its nature, will make you no worlds left to conquer.
Magic conjured through tedium. 40-man raids, ostentatiously enormous questlines, microscopically low drop prices, precious little in the means of difficulty tuning--and, needless to say, those halcyon days before you could send multiple packages in one mail. Technical ability was always confounded to farm with endurance, to battle RNGs stacked against you .
